Businessman fights off gunmen with coconut branch, taxi driver implicated
Gowkarran Persaud, a businessman of 16 Section ‘C’ Cumberland, East Canje Berbice, is counting his blessings after being attacked by four bandits armed with cutlass and gun at his home on Sunday after returning from a party in the wee hours of the morning.
Persaud’s ordeal which was captured on CCTV video footage, began at 02:17 hrs and lasted for one minute, after he had come home with a taxi from a party. Persaud was just about to enter his yard when four masked men ran up behind him.
Persaud immediately put up a fight causing the bandits to launch a cutlass attack on Persaud who fell to the ground while fighting off the bandits.
One of them had a gun and another, a cutlass. The bandit with the cutlass fired some nine chops at Persaud while another bandit stood over him with a gun. They had gained access to Persaud’s yard by opening a hole in a zinc fence in the back yard.
Persaud fought tooth and nail with the bandits and was lucky to ward off any life threatening injuries, since he was kicking at the bandits while he was on the ground. Persaud eventually managed to get up from the ground and threw a motorcycle on two of the bandits, who at that time gave up their fight with the businessman.
Persaud them picked up a coconut branch and attempted to give chase after the bandits who were fleeing at this time. They in turn fired a single shot, which caused Persaud to give up on his pursuit.
A report was made to the Police and initial investigations led to the arrest of the taxi driver who was moving Persaud at the time. Three others are in custody. Persaud said that he is glad to be alive, since it was he alone against the four bandits.
