Donald Ramotar
The University of Guyana Workers Union (UGWU) says PPP/C presidential candidate Donald Ramotar has declined to be part of a presidential debate it is organising which includes the other major players in the election race. βThe UGWU is in receipt of a letter from Mr. Robert Persaud on the Ministry of Agriculture letterhead, informing the Union that Mr. Donald Ramotar has declined an invitation from the Union to officially debate presidential candidates David Granger and Khemraj Ramjattan at the Turkeyen campus,β stated a UGWU release on Tuesday.
According to the union, Persaud indicated that Ramotar prefers a debate event that the Faculty of Social Sciences is planning, something the body stated is not about to happen. βThe union can confirm with a 100 percent accuracy that the Faculty is not planning such a debate and has not been in communication with Mr. Ramotar over such an event. Mr. Ramotar has been contacted by an individual lecturer within that faculty to speak to his class,β UGWU said. The union continued that the lecturer had contacted all of the presidential candidates and indicated to them that the format was simply to have them address the class. Efforts to get confirmation from the university were unsuccessful.
When contacted, Persaud told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com) that they were committed to the Faculty of Social Sciences event and would be meeting with the Dean on Friday to finalise the format of the debate. Meanwhile, the UGWU said it will proceed with its plans with changes to the format to include other actors. It is to issue another statement when those those plans have been completed.
