Region Four Chairman Daniel Seeram, who was under investigation for allegedly threatening his father-in-law earlier this month, will be charged and is scheduled to appear in court on March 31.

Seeram yesterday made this disclosure in a statement which was issued in response to an article published in the Guyana Chronicle newspaper, which claimed that he “failed” to attend court.

In the statement, Seeram explained that he was contacted by an officer attached to the Criminal Investigation Department’s Major Crimes Unit around 21.00hrs on Thursday and was informed that he would have to attend the Sparandaam Magistrate’s Court for 09:00 hrs on Friday.

However, Seeram said he informed the officer that he was out of the jurisdiction and it would be impossible for him to be present on such short notice.

“I informed the officer that I was out of the jurisdiction and further it was impossible for me to return to Georgetown to attend court at 9am, given the sudden and extremely short notice,” he said.

Seeram said he retained an attorney, whom he said was present in court on Friday during which the magistrate rescheduled the matter.

“Notwithstanding the late notice, I retained a lawyer, Senior Counsel Roysdale Forde, MP, who was present in court and represented me in said matter. My counsel later informed me that my matter is rescheduled for Thursday 31st March, 2022,” the statement added.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) had previously said Seeram and his father-in-law were being investigated by the police after they allegedly threatened each other with their licensed firearms.

The GPF reported that during the wee hours of March 6, Seeram and his father-in-law, Shaheed Hamid, were at Movietown Mall when an argument ensued between them. Hamid told police that Seeram drew a black handgun from his pants waist, cocked it, and threatened to kill him.

The commotion caught the attention of the security at the mall, resulting in Seeram being escorted off the premises.

However later the same morning, Seeram visited the Alberttown Police Station and made a report against his father-in-law. As a result, Hamid was asked to report to the station and both parties were questioned.

During the questioning, Seeram told police that he went to the establishment to speak to his wife about an ongoing issue and Hamid intervened. This led to an exchange of words and Hamid drew his firearm.

Hamid, however denied the allegation.

They were arrested and later each released on his own recognisance. Their firearms were also confiscated by the police.
