Mustapha presents the 102- year- old resident with her hamper.
Region Six Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha, sought to honour a promise he made to residents of Canefield, East Canje during a community meeting in the area late last year. Mustapha had promised to visit and honour one of Guyanaβs oldest residents. He did so last week when the woman celebrated her 102nd birth anniversary.
Sukdai Mohabir, of Lot 86 Canefield Settlement, reached her memorable milestone recently and received a courtesy call from the outgoing Chairman who presented her with a hamper which consisted of food items and nourishing enrichments.
βIt is important that we recognize our senior citizensβ, Mustapha said. Mohabir, who hears, sees and speaks very well for her age, expressed thanks to Mustapha and the team that visited.
She was born at Mara, East Bank Berbice. Her parents arrived from India as indentured labourers.
Mohabir is quite active these days. She is staying with a family friend of hers. She attends Hindu religious functions, including jhandis and she is usually the star of the show since she sings melodiously. Her caretaker says that she does a lot of housework and sometimes becomes angry when they tell her to sit down and take it easy.
