Guyana, led by half centuries from Kevlon Anderson and Sachin Singh, coupled by a disciplined bowling performance, defeated Jamaica by 82 runs as the Regional U17 50-over Cricket tournament continued yesterday.
Guyana opted to bat on a decent Queen’s Park Oval track and opener Alex Algoo struck off-spinner Roberto Simpson for consecutive sixes and cut pacer Andre Morgan to the point boundary to get the innings going in fine fashion. Algoo was severe on anything short and drove Morgan before cutting him for fours, while Sachin Singh drove Elian Emmanuel over mid off for six as Guyana’s fifty came up in the seventh over.
Algoo continued to look positive, but when on 46 he played around to a straight ball from off-spinner Kirk McKenzie and was lbw with the score on 71. Junior Sinclair faced 37 balls before he was dismissed for eight with the score on 90 as the Jamaicans applied the brakes on the Guyanese scoring with steady bowling; while the first fifty came in the seventh over, the second took 25.
Singh inched his way towards his fifty which he brought up with a six and two singles, but in an attempt to increase the scoring, he was bowled by Simpson for 52 which contained two fours and a similar number of sixes; he faced 118 balls.
Kevlon Anderson started slowly, but gained confidence and stroked the ball nicely as he propped up the total in the latter stages of the innings. He pulled and cut Romaine Jacobs for fours to bring up Guyana’s 150 in the 44th over, before stroking him to long-off for another boundary.
While Anderson continued to gather his runs, Gevon Schultz, who was promoted up the order with nine overs remaining, struck Morgan to the cover boundary before he was bowled in the said over for nine. Anderson cut Morgan to the point boundary and reached his fifty shortly after with a single to cover. He struck five fours in his unbeaten 52 off 73 balls, while skipper Ashmead Nedd was not out on four as Guyana reached 182-4. Simpson, Morgan, Matthew Comerie and McKenzie took one wicket each.
Opener McKenzie struck Reaz Khan and Schultz for boundaries before Nedd, who brought himself on after four overs, trapped Ricardo McIntosh lbw for three. Guyana opted for spin at both ends early and Kevin Umroa had skipper McKenzie caught by wicket-keeper Kevin Christian for 13 as Jamaica were reduced to 23-2 in reply. Nedd and Umroa restricted Jamaica’s scoring with consistent bowling and at the end of the 15th over they were 36-2.
Andre Smiley and Jerome Jones attempted to repair the early damage but after they had put on 23, Jones pulled Umroa to Algoo at short mid-wicket to depart for 13. Anderson then removed Lennox Simpson (07) and Michael Thompson (00) as the Jamaicans struggled against the Guyanese spin attack.
However, Smiley showed some fight and struck Sinclair for six over long on before Morgan was caught and bowled by Anderson for 14. Nedd then uprooted the stumps of Smiley for 36, while Umroa removed Comerie (01) leaving the score at 96-8. Pradesh Balkishun completed the final rights by having Emmanuel (00) stumped and Romaine Jacobs (02) caught and bowled as Jamaica were bowled out for 100 in 45 overs. Umroa claimed 3-15 (10), man-of-the-match Anderson 3-23 (10), Balkishun 2-3 from one over and Nedd 2-15 from 10.
