By Zaheer Mohamed Raymond Reifer struck a composed century, while Romario Shepherd hit a fine half century to boost West Demerara batting against Georgetown when the fifth round of the Cricket Guyana Inc Jaguars three-day Franchise League commenced yesterday. The left-handed Reifer struck 100, while Shepherd hit 52 as West Demerara rallied to 333 all out in 97.3 overs after they decided to bat at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo. Openers Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Ronaldo Renee added 36 for the opening stand before medium pacer Robin Bacchus provided Georgetown with the breakthrough when he had the former caught by wicket-keeper Dexter Solomon for 23. Bacchus then accounted for Renee (16) in similar fashion before Akshaya Persaud retired hurt after being hit on his helmet by pacer Paul Wintz when on 20. Imalch was then trapped lbw to Steven Sankar (1-49) for 28 to leave the score on 127-3. Reifer and Shepherd then consolidated to frustrate their opponents with level-headed batting as they added 107 for the fifth wicket. Shepherd counted eight fours in his half century while Reifer’s 50 contained six boundaries. However, their resistance was ended when Shepherd was caught off skipper Leon Johnson. While Reifer continued to time the ball well, West Demerara lost Travis Persaud caught off Johnson for 23 with three sixes before Persaud who was given the green-light to continue his innings, was removed by Ashmead Need without adding to his score. Reifer continued to accumulate runs on both side of the pitch and struck Johnson for a six to reach 99 before bringing up his century with a single off the very next delivery; he was lbw to the said bowler after batting for 246 minutes. Nedd then removed Malcolm Hubbard (07), while Christopher Barnwell (1-24) accounted for Richie Looknauth (08). Georgetown opted for the new ball, and Mahendra Dhanpaul took boundaries off Bacchus before he was caught off the said bowler for a rapid 31 with six fours as West Demerara were bowled out 13 minutes before time. Keshram Seyhodan was not out on eight as Bacchus picked up 3-40, Johnson 3-67 and Nedd 2-40. Raymond Perez (01*) and Bacchus (00*) safely negotiated the day’s final over bowled by Shepherd as Georgetown finished on one without lost.
