Report shows engine failure caused Guyana air crash in 2014

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — Investigators say the official findings of a January 2014 jungle air crash that killed the pilot and a cargo handler show that the accident was caused by a manufacturer's engine fault rather than poor maintenance.

The local civil aviation authority said Saturday that the 13-seater Cessna Grand Caravan operated by Trans Guyana was shuttling fuel to miners in the western jungles near Venezuela when it lost engine power and went down in thick vegetation. Canadian pilot Blake Slater and cargo handler Dwayne Jacobs were killed.

The aviation agency says the crash had much to do with a fracture of a compressor stator through fatigue.

Trans Guyana said Saturday it is identifying possible crash landing sites along its routes so that planes can come down safely in any future emergencies.

Blake was a very good and serious pilot. Two young hard working boys lost their lives.
