Reports of grave fuel shortage at WCD

Vehicle operators on the West Coast of the Demerara River, have reported grave gas shortages being experienced within the last few weeks. The operators have complained about only being able to buy small amounts of fuel, while some service stations “from Anna Catherina to Parika” are said to be without fuel.
Service stations within Georgetown and on the East Bank of Demerara have reported that they have fuel, but stations on the West Bank of the river have reported shortages.  Vehicle operators say that gas prices have also risen from $228 per litre to as much as $320 per litre, and they can only full their tanks once per day.
A visit to Rubis’ Georgetown station proved that gas is available for purchasing. Shell gas station also reported that for the time, they have gas, but are experiencing a shortage. It was mentioned that the station is awaiting a boat that will be bringing the fuel.
A Guyoil agent told this publication that for three weeks now he has been experiencing fuel shortage. His station has been closed since, but the operator says he expects to have fuel for the weekend. Kaieteur News was also told that some gas stations on the East Coast of Demerara have reported shortages.
Head of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) Mahendra Sharma told Kaieteur News yesterday, that the necessary checks are being made to ascertain whether there indeed is a fuel shortage. He told this publication that as soon as he gets the information it will be related.
