GUYANA AND BRAZIL OPEN TALKS ON LETHEM ROAD, DEEP WATER HARBOR
President Donald Ramotar has opened talks with his Brazilian counterpart Dilma Rousseff on the execution of several projects here including paving the road to Lethem.
He made the announcement at a media briefing on Friday at the Office of the President. The Guyanese leader was in neighbouring Brazil for one day last month to attend the regional trade bloc MERCOSUR Summit.
βI had a meeting with the president of Brazil and we spoke about what I consider very important projects that I think are coming closer to fruition, like the (Lethem) road, the deep water harbour and more hydropower facilities. Hopefully in the new month Iβll probably be meeting some (officials) to establish a technical team from Brazil and Guyana to start to work and try to bring these things into operation as early as possible,β the president said.
Ramotar noted that some of these projects would also benefit Brazil such as hydropower. It is also expected that with the paving of the Lethem to Linden road Brazilian industry in the north of South Americaβs largest country would get ready access to a seaport with the construction of the deep water harbour in Berbice.
Guyana and Brazil already have trade and military cooperation agreements in place.
