Tiger Bay residents displaced as businessman claims land ownership
More than 30 persons, including children, from Tiger Bay, Georgetown are now displaced.
This was after a popular city businessman claimed that he is the owner of a plot of land which the residents have been residing on for almost 30 years.
According to information received, about 20 men, some of whom were allegedly armed with guns, showed up on Wednesday at the land, which is located at the back of an adjacent business place, and began constructing a fence around the perimeter. The fence was built around six shacks.
No gate was built for the residents to have access to their premises. They claimed that they were forced to look at the construction workers as they built the fence, without intervening, because they were fearful for their lives.
“They built the fence around our houses, so basically what they did is fence us in,” one female resident said.
The woman added that when the construction workers left the site on Wednesday, after completing the fence, the affected persons dismantled it.
“We break it because we have children who have to come out and go to school and some of us have to go to work and we cannot leave. We’re trapped,” said Tameka Adams, one of the affected persons.
However, less than 24 hours after the residents damaged the fence, another set of workers turned up at the location and rebuilt the structure.
Kaieteur News was told that one of the Tiger Bay residents is in a court battle with the businessman over another piece of land in the area.
Residents are claiming that it is unfair for them to move from that location since they have been living there for years. They said that almost everyone from the area has applied for house lots, but many were never called in.
“We are living here for years and he (businessman) just come and claim he owns the land. Nobody showed us any documents or so, and even if he bought the land, he was supposed to give us some time to get a place and move,” a resident said.
