Tiger Bay residents displaced as businessman claims land ownership

October 10, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

More than 30 persons, including children, from Tiger Bay, Georgetown are now displaced.

This was after a popular city businessman claimed that he is the owner of a plot of land which the residents have been residing on for almost 30 years.
According to information received, about 20 men, some of whom were allegedly armed with guns, showed up on Wednesday at the land, which is located at the back of an adjacent business place, and began constructing a fence around the perimeter. The fence was built around six shacks.
No gate was built for the residents to have access to their premises. They claimed that they were forced to look at the construction workers as they built the fence, without intervening, because they were fearful for their lives.
“They built the fence around our houses, so basically what they did is fence us in,” one female resident said.

Several residents registering their concerns with the police.

The woman added that when the construction workers left the site on Wednesday, after completing the fence, the affected persons dismantled it.
“We break it because we have children who have to come out and go to school and some of us have to go to work and we cannot leave. We’re trapped,” said Tameka Adams, one of the affected persons.
However, less than 24 hours after the residents damaged the fence, another set of workers turned up at the location and rebuilt the structure.
Kaieteur News was told that one of the Tiger Bay residents is in a court battle with the businessman over another piece of land in the area.
Residents are claiming that it is unfair for them to move from that location since they have been living there for years. They said that almost everyone from the area has applied for house lots, but many were never called in.
“We are living here for years and he (businessman) just come and claim he owns the land. Nobody showed us any documents or so, and even if he bought the land, he was supposed to give us some time to get a place and move,” a resident said.

You may have a point here, cain. Tiger Bay people are being provoked just as Plaisance village people are provoked. The power-drunk PPP regime is not above provoking racial tension in the lead-up to elections.

rohee was goading David Granger to organize big demonstrations recently. But Granger is a seasoned military strategist and he deliberately organized small, measured and manageable picketing excersises to forestall infiltration by PPP thugs.

APNU and the AFC know that the PPP is spoiling for streetfighting but they won't bite that bait.

Bai Django,

The people enable these parasites. I somehow think a large bribe is shared with the top dogs at the station.

If teh squatters have been living on the plot as long as they claim to have done, then, unless the owner can prove that he made prior attempts to remove them they have squatters's rights.

What is happening in Guyana, as it continues its tumble down to Haity style corruption, is that rich people locate lands for which no one has official title, and then sieze the land.  Squatters's rights exist and if the AFC and APNU can climb out of their bougie shells this is an issue that they need to raise in parliament.

The AFC doesnt give the slightest about poor black people, and APNU thinks that they own them.  What will shock both parties is when those poor black people stay home on election day, allowing the PPP to take back its majority control.

was this true.  Where are these people living today?

I have to agree with storm on the issue of adverse possession. If the owner has made no attempt to remove the squatters for twelve years, they cannot be removed and can legally apply for prescriptive rights and transport. This is regardless of whether the owner has paid the taxes or not.

I am interested in who the owner is. It seems to me that the newspaper knows who the owner is but is not publishing the name. This then is someone who is well connected. The police will not act against this person unless political or public pressure comes to bear.

My GCE and A levels are crap compared to to what I earned elsewhere. I do not know what you have up your rear end that you presume to make sense by beginning with the personal. You are picking fights with the wrong person.

At minimum they can tie him up in court for the next ten years. Guyana does not have standing landlord tenant court and these kinds of cases takes for ever. They Guys who owned the bus Salome in the corentyne have their cousin squatting on their land and they have him in court for 16 years now and no resolution.

Of course I can teach them to make what ever if they so need to know. What does that have to do with the matter at hand except your shallow mind believes you are on to something. As I said, age and long life has not afforded you any measure of clarity. Racism and petty bullshit seem to take up residence in your head.

When last you went to Tiger Bay?  These people live in a slum yard.  They eat, $hit, and pi$$ in the same spot.  Maybe some developer bought the place and wants to convert it into a decent space.  Granger doesn't live too far away down the road.  Maybe he doesn't want a slum yard in his backyard.

Sorry, I had no cause to visit the area. If these people live in a slum yard it was that way the last time I was there. I do not know what qualifies you as taking superior airs to people who are poor and have little means to bootstrap themselves.

The PPP, were it a good government concerned with the welfare of the people, could have moved them, or upgrade their area as an urban restoration project. After all they give Buddy 800K US gratis, took over the entire Pradoville passing on infrastructure work of over half a billion dollars to the state.

Those crooks passed off the cost of  movement of the two dishes there, 185 million dollars, as an investment to NCN!

The fact you so disparagingly reference these people, your countrymen, means you are distilled shit. I wonder what you think of those poor in Leguan, or plastic City and Plastic City like places that still dot the landscape!

I can see you grow up in guyana under the PPP regime...it smells on you.

What is wrong with living in the slum if that is your luck in life? Some 2 thirds of the world population live on less than a dollar a day and most of them are in India and Africa. These people, with their meager status are kings to those millions in the street of Mumbai.

One does not have to be a sympathizer to the poor. One must indeed sympathize to be consider a normally functioning human being. Note you are here, in the US and the ground of our democracy is on Locke's two treatise on government. In the first he noted:

God hath not left one man so to the mercy of another, that he may starve him if he please: God the Lord and Father of all, has given no one of his children such a property in his peculiar portion of the things of this world, but that he has given his needy brother a right to the surplusage of his goods!!!

Think on that

I have nothing against poor people.  I do my fair share to support orphanages and a few poor families in Guyana.  My problem is with hypocrites who know very little about what really goes on in Guyana and they take lies told by divisive people and run with it.

Your problem is you are a shallow twit. The question at hand was about people being displaced and dancing on a pin will not make what has happened here any more palatable.

You characterize them as slumdogs disparagingly. I was just correcting you. It has little to do with divisive people or what ever contortion you aspire to manufacture to  avoid being disparaging and disrespectful to poor people.

There is a video on youtube of these very people and if you look at it you will see their humanity. It is that that defines them not whatever presumption of beauty, elegance, intellect or the good life that is your natural bequeathal. That does not mean a damn if you lack a soul.

It is also not what you do for orphans etc but what compassion kindliness  and seeps through the ether by your presence. I smell Lilith.

You are such an ass hole. Maybe you were conceived in a slum yard. More than half of the world's population lives in slum yards. Did you ever finish third grade?
