School community asks DOE to give Richmond Hill HS leader more time

Posted: Thursday, August 22, 2013 10:30 am

A year ago, Richmond Hill High School was in a state of educational purgatory. Attempts by the city Department of Education to shut down the school and reopen it under a new name with a new administration had failed, with a court backing a teachers’ union lawsuit killing the plan.

The school reopened last September under its original name, but with a new principal, and parents and students entered the halls of another school year hoping for the best.

A year later, a number of parents at the school say they were seeing brighter days ahead, which is why they’re confused and angry about the DOE’s alleged plans to remove the new principal, Wayne Anderson, from his post only two weeks before his second school year starts.

“We are very happy with Mr. Anderson,” said Theresa Echevarria, president of the school’s Parent Teacher Association. “He has opened up a line of communication between parents and students and he has attended all the PTA meetings.”

Echevarria said Anderson has been much more responsive to concerns from parents and students, and she is confident that his work would improve the school if given the chance.

“Every school is going to have their ups and downs,” she said. “But Mr. Anderson really pushes the kids. He’s having the kids strive for stuff. He wants to see that they want to succeed.”

The DOE did not respond to multiple inquiries seeking to confirm its plans to fire Anderson as of press time, but at least one staff member at the school confirmed that the department is looking to terminate Anderson as principal before school opens in two weeks. The DOE did not propose closing the school again this year after its 2012 plans failed.

Vishnu Mahadeo, a member of the school’s leadership team and president of the Richmond Hill Economic Development Corporation, said the school has made clear progress in the past year.

“Mr. Anderson has stopped the downward slide the school had experienced,” Mahadeo, who has two children in the school, said.

He added that under Anderson, the school has moved to a more streamlined program, from three daily schedules to one, and has made efforts to reach out to the community.

“Community involvement is very important and Mr. Anderson understands that,” Mahadeo said. “This school is very important and vital to our community.”

Parents also fear RHHS will lose the annex that opened at site of the former site of St. Benedict Joseph Labre Catholic School on 117th Street, to relieve overcrowding at the school, forcing students back into trailers in the school’s yard.

News of Anderson’s potential dismissal moved fast through the school community and was met with disapproval.

“I’m not surprised,” said one teacher at the school who asked not to be identified, and but said she was left “jaded” by her experiences at Richmond Hill. “They must be afraid the school will actually succeed.”

Echevarria said she shares the jaded opinion that the DOE is purposely torpedoing the school.

“My view as a parent is that they want to close the school down, so they want the kids to fail, to give them a reason to,” she said, adding that she has called for other parents at the school to make their views known by calling the DOE.

Which half are dummies?  The problem in the USA, we look down on skilled/technical education when is is what actually makes the nation works.  Do you call on the lawyers or traders on wall street when anything goes wrong in your house, car etc.  Who you think do all the fabrication, cementing, welding, cutting, etc to build sky scrapers, bridges, tunnels, etc.  In fact, the ones who wear white gloves end up being unemployed as much of the white glove, sharp pencil tasks are done in places like India.

For the country to work, we need people who can use both their hands and heads, not their heads and just their fingers.  Also, we do not need druggies to be handling power saws and operating powerful equipment.  We need smart sober people who could use their hands to deliver product and service which make our lives livable and comfortable.

The USA needs to reorient its thinking on what it means be "educated".

Well said Mr. Baseman.

Without real "working" people, there will be no need for managers.  Managers are needed when there are people to manage, not machines and robots. The US will return to its glory when the "blue-collar" man/woman are gainfully employed in stable and fruitful jobs.

Yes, rather than they end up in Prison or a ***** House.

You have proven my original point of prejudice.  I think its a warped mindset thinking technical jobs are the alternative to prison.  This is why we have so many "college grads" buried in student loans and cannot find jobs and the taxpayers have to foot the bill.

Parents need to stop "looking down" at their kids who may not excel in quantum physics, but praise them for pursuing their interest and making them feel proud of doing what is best for them, what the enjoy and encourage them to become the best in what they chose to do, regardless what that is, as long as its legal and honest.

The US is struggling due to "unemployable" people.

In your original statement you said dummies and smarties.  The dummies are the ones who fall in the way-side and should become "technicals".  Have you ever thought what it is that drives so many of our kids to the "way-side"?  Do you know many of our kids who don't get an "A" in math are made to feel like losers, do you understand how this affects their morale and pride?

Nehru, I have seen so many kids very unhappy in "high-end" professions which they were forced to pursue to please the parent and grandparent.  I can tell you, they are unhappy and will never be successful.  You have to enjoy what you do, it must come from the heart and you will be successful.

Correct, parenting are a large reason why kids end up in such situations.  Many parents are obsessed with wukking fuh the yankee dalla and leave their kids to their own devices.  Their weekends are filled with rum sessions.

If you take most of the troubled kids, you will find a direct link with parenting.  I know several families right in Queens who brought up kids without any falling to the way side.  Not all became white collar workers, some are blue-collar, but sure as hell decent, hardworking.  Their parents were very attendant to their kids needs and kept them close and out of trouble.

We need more parents to be involved, whether its New York or Guyana or anywhere else. But America seems to be a big problem, so many distractions. Its all about the latest sneakers, clothes and staying out all hours. Both girls and boys and the girls are worse.

Not distraction, just people lacking in values and don't know what's important.
