– Shane Webster Tournament MVP

The final of the National Club Basketball Championships (Road to Mecca IV) capped off in fantastic fashion on Christmas Eve night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) where Bounty Colts edged Victory Valley Royals by two points (85-83) to retain the prestigious local title.

Colts’ Skipper Shelroy Thomas was hungry for the win and led his team with a game high 28 points and five steals after Royals shot to a 14 point lead in the first quarter (17-3). Colts rallied back and reduced the deficit to 3 points (24-21) at the end of the first quarter. Subsequently, the score see-saw back and forth with marginal leads for both teams for the remaining three quarters.
Tournament MVP, Shane Webster of Colts, picked up three fouls during the first quarter and was brought on until the final quarter, while his teammate, Jonathan Mangra, first featured in the final quarter as the champions tried fresh legs to blow out the opposition. But, that tactic didn’t work against Royals that were led by Harrold Adams that scored 25 points, and the team found energy from nowhere to keep battling neck and neck with Colts. During the final minute of the game with Royals being two-points down, they were fouled by Colts, that seven fouls into the bonus but unfortunately a lapse of concentration by the officials awarded Royals a throw-in instead of two free-throws.
Bounty Colts who won the first, second and under-23 2017 titles with their association GABA (Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association) completed a quartet of title wins for 2017 with their triumph in Mecca IV and the $600,000 first prize. Victory Valley Royals of Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) received $400,000 for their second place finish.
In the third place playoff, Travis Burnett fetched Kobras (GABA) to the third place title and $200,000 cash prize. In the 76-75 extra-time victory over Dyna’s Ravens (GABA), Burnett netted a heroic 34 points.
The MVP, Shane Webster of Bounty Colts scored to a total of 95 points, 58 rebounds, 8 steals and 4 assists. He received $100,000.
Guyana Basketball Official Council (GBOC) received $100,000 to help with officials’ development.
