Doctors have been forced to remove one of the eyes of businessman, Mohamed Chand, following the brutal beating that bandits inflicted on him and his wife, Commissioner of Title, Nicola Pierre, last Thursday.
Kaieteur News understands that Chand, 50, was flown overseas for medical checks last week, in the hope that specialists could have saved his sight. However, the eye proved to be too severely damaged and he underwent surgery to remove it yesterday.
Mr. Chand also suffered head injuries that required some 35 stitches.
Kaieteur News also understands that Mrs. Pierre is being treated for a broken jaw and other injuries.
The gunmen, who broke into the couple’s home a Felicity, East Coast Demerara, reportedly attacked them while they were asleep.
Pierre and Mohamed were said to have been awakened by blows then gun-butted until they lost consciousness.
Their eleven-year-old son reportedly had the traumatic experience of seeing the bandits beat his parents.
Kaieteur News also confirmed that the fleeing gunmen shot at Philip Lewis, one of the sons of former Commissioner of Police Laurie Lewis, after trying to take his vehicle.
The incident occurred at the Bachelor’s Adventure Public Road. A bullet grazed Mr. Lewis’ left shoulder.
The Guyana Bar Association has expressed alarm at the attack on the family, while calling on Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan and Commissioner of Police Seelal Persaud to take further action to combat the surge in violent crime.
