The new moon was not sighted on Friday evening, according to the Saudi Supreme Court. Therefore, Sunday will be the first of Ramadan.

I find this funny. It is like the sound of tree falling in the forest. I wonder what would be the court ruling on that.

It is an extremely long tradition to start Ramadan on the next day, if the moon is not seen on the designated day; whether in Guyana, Saudi Arabia or any other part of the world.

It is nothing funny, Stormborn.

Ramadan 2014: When Is The First Day Of Muslim Holy Month?

Muslims are preparing for Ramadan, their holy month, which begins this Saturday.

The Fiqh Council of North America said the month will begin Saturday and run through Monday, July 28. During Ramadan, Muslims will fast and practice abstinence from dawn until sunset for 30 days. The annual event marks the anniversary of the Quran being revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the 12-month Islamic calendar, starting after the sighting of the new moon. The holy month starts at sunset, or “rukyah,” when the moon is spotted, and goes on until the next new moon appears.

The month of fasting, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, is celebrated by more than 1.5 billion Muslims around the world, including in the U.S., where there are nearly 2.6 million Muslims, according to the Pew Research Center.

The purpose of Ramadan is to focus on spirituality, charity and prayer as well as withholding any acts of violence during the fast. All Muslims around the world are expected to participate, with the exception of the elderly, sick and pregnant.

In Saudi Arabia, the Interior Ministry threatened to deport non-Muslim foreigners who do not respect the month of fasting. The official statement urges anyone in the nation to "respect the sentiments of Muslims by not eating, drinking or smoking during Ramadan's daylight hours in public places, including roads and workplaces."

The typical greeting during Ramadan is "Ramadan Kareem" or "Ramadan Mubarak."

Muslims are expected to refrain from food and drink and abstain from smoking and sex each day during the month from dawn to dusk. The breaking of the fast, or iftar, begins at dusk by eating dates. Some Muslims have slightly different variations and have broader definitions of practices during Ramadan.

Ramadan commences annually with a celebration called Hilal, comprised of feasting and prayer. Ramadan ends with the three-day Eid al-Fitr festival, sometimes abbreviated as Eid, where many feast and join in Islamic prayer, known as salat, while saying "Allahu Akbar" or "God is Great.”

Fiqh Council of North America Announces Dates for Ramadan and Eid al Fitr 2014

RAMADAN & SHAWWAL 1435 (2014)

"O you who believe, fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those
before you, that you may (learn) self-restraint." Qur’an 2: 183

The Fiqh Council of North America recognizes astronomical calculation as an acceptable Shar’i method for determining the beginning of Lunar months including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal.   FCNA uses Makkah al-Mukarrama as a conventional point and takes the position that the conjunction must take place before sunset in Makkah and moon must set after sunset in Makkah.

On the basis of this method, the dates of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr for the year 1435 AH are established as follows:

1st of Ramadan will be on Saturday, June 28, 2014

1st of Shawwal will be on Monday, July 28, 2014

Ramadan 1435 AH:
The Astronomical New Moon is on June 27, 2014 (Friday) at 8:08 a.m. Universal Time (11:08 a.m. Makkah time). Sunset at Makkah on June 27 is at 7:07 p.m., while moonset is at 7:08 p.m. Moon is born before sunset in Makkah and moonset is after sunset. Therefore first day of Ramadan is June 28, 2014 (Saturday), insha'Allah. First Tarawih prayer will be on Friday night.

Eid ul-Fitr 1435 AH:
The Astronomical New Moon is on July 26, 2014 (Saturday) at 22:41 Universal Time. (1:41 a.m. on July 27, Makkah time). On July 26, Saturday, sunset at Makkah is 7:03 p.m. and moonset is 6:33 p.m. Moon is born after sunset in Makkah and moon sets before sunset. On July 27, Sunday, sunset at Makkah is 7:02 p.m. and moonset is at 7:14 p.m. Moon is born before sunset, while moonset is after sunset. Therefore, first day of Shawwal, i.e., Eid al-Fitr is July 28, Monday, insha'Allah.

May Allah (swt) keep us on the right path, and accept our fasting and prayers. Ameen.

I don't know about that being funny, in fact I take it very serious. A Court deciding Religious matters?? Really??  Isn't Saudi Arabia a Family Business?  And a corrupt and cynical one??
