The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) looking to revive its flagship newspaper “The Mirror.”
President Donald Ramotar believes it is important especially at this time when freedom of expression that the country is afforded today, has been constantly abused.
At its 50th anniversary, the paper regarded the working class paper that was sold at nights, was remembered for its role in the struggle for Guyana’s independence, its wide circulation and attacks by political foes of the PPP.
The newspaper was started in 1962 following the infamous split in the country’s first national party, as a medium to propagate the party’s views that were quite apart from a mass propaganda campaign to divide the country along racial lines.
He said The Mirror was the only paper to take an opposing stand as others like The Evening Post and The Chronicle at the time were mouth pieces for colonialism and political opponents who had a vindictive agenda.
