This reminds me of William Randolph Hearst in 1897.

Russia is now at a unique vantage point in this conflict and they are using it to exercise influence and to shut out the US!  They were one of the powers in the League of Nations who voted the current borders into International law.

Today they have this special relations with Venezuela, who don't recognize that vote and we have the PNC who is cozy with the USA.  The Russians are in a position to play the role of mediator.  I believe they must have this in mind!
