Venezuela has welcomed the arrival of Russian Tu-160 strategic bombers as an opportunity to demonstrate its resolve to defend the nation against possible foreign military intervention, with the help of “friends” if need be.

Two Tu-160 strategic bombers made a gracious landing at Simón Bolívar International Airport on Monday where they were greeted by the honor guard of the Venezuelan air force. Wearing orange pilot suits and combat helmets, Russian servicemen descended onto the runway where they were eager to present their colleagues with a scaled model of the 'White Swan' bomber, which they had just flown over 10,000 kilometers to reach the Caribbean shores in order to take part in “combined operational flights” with the Venezuelan Air Force.

We are getting prepared to defend Venezuela when it is needed.

And we will do it with our friends who advocate respect-based relations between states,” Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said after the two bombers, together with An-124 transport and an Il-62 plane, landed in Venezuela.

While the Russian delegation painted their arrival to be a rare friendly visit, the Venezuelan Defence Ministry noted that 'Russia-Venezuela 2018' operational flights will represent a “demonstration of strength.” The training, Caracas maintains, will foster military-technical cooperation and facilitate the exchange of practical experience between the two militaries.

The Tu-160, nicknamed the ‘White Swan’ in Russia and designated as ‘Blackjack’ by NATO, is the largest supersonic combat aircraft in the world. The long-range aircraft, capable of carrying nuclear and conventional missiles, can cover a distance of more than 12,000 kilometers without refueling. The Russian Air Force conducted similar non-stop flights to Venezuela in 2008 and 2013.

The flight to Venezuela over the Atlantic Ocean, the Barents, Norwegian and Caribbean Seas did not go unnoticed, as Norwegian F-16 fighter jets shadowed the Russian planes during part of their flight, even though according to the Russian Defense Ministry the flight was conducted “in strict accordance with the international regulations on the use of airspace.” The bombers’ deployment to the Latin American nation follows Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s visit to Moscow last week.

"Demonstration of strength," says Venezuela's Defence Ministry. Coming just days after Ram & McRae suggested that budgetary allocation for Guyana's military is too much. With Venezuela's territorial claim of Essequibo very much active as a volcano, we should not grudge the GDF its share of the budget pie. National defence trumps party differences.

Little to do with Guyana.  This is Russian/ American rivalry and a reaction to the USA position in Ukraine!  Russia is a signatory to the 1899 arbitration and has stood with the UK on the issue. Russia may seek to be mediator!  I don’t see them flipping 180 on this!

You out like South.  Dem disgruntled ex GDF did an efficient job in Lusignan and Bartica few years ago!

Dont think so?

Every Guyanese want a potent military, but historically they are know to turn their guns and training on the mostly Indian masses.   I have a feeling we will see this again.  And don’t expect outcry from Volda and her backers!

Pompeo Blasts Russia for Strategic Bombers Sent to Venezuela

Pompeo Blasts Russia for Strategic Bombers Sent to Venezuela

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo criticized the Russian government for sending “bombers halfway around the world” to Venezuela.

“The Russian and Venezuelan people should see this for what it is: two corrupt governments squandering public funds, and squelching liberty and freedom while their people suffer,” Pompeo said on Twitter late Monday.

It’s “absolutely inappropriate” for Pompeo to call the Russian government corrupt, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Tuesday on a conference call. After U.S. President Donald Trump last week criticized the secretary of state’s predecessor, Rex Tillerson, “maybe such an assessment will follow concerning the undiplomatic remarks of Mr. Pompeo,” Peskov said.

A group of Russian military planes crossed the Atlantic Ocean and landed in Venezuela, the Russian state news agency TASS reported earlier, citing a Defense Ministry statement. According to the ministry, two strategic Tu-160 bombers, an An-124 cargo plane and a long-range Il-62 jet airliner were among aircraft that landed at Maiquetia airport outside Caracas on Monday.

The U.S. and European Union have led an effort to impose sanctions on Venezuela as they seek to isolate the country on the world stage. The U.S. has accused Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro of undermining democratic institutions amid the country’s growing political and economic crisis.

After meeting with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow earlier this month, Maduro said he secured support from Russia to increase oil production by 1 million barrels a day, as well as for mining investments and maintenance of weapons and defense systems.

jus asking,

is this support of 1 billion barrel per day coming from Guyana side - don’t think Venezuela has the potential anymore to increase production.

According to this article by, Venezuela can only produce under 700,000 barrel per day.

GDF should send their EX army personnel to the border- that’s where they are needed, not to sit on a desk and get tax payers money.

Where or what would the Venezuelans attack first if they decide to invade Guyana? Would they just attack targets in Essequibo or direct bombings on government headquarters in Demerara?

They would or should attack the nearest kitchen first. Cant fight war on hungry belly.

U can arm and equip the GDF how much u want. They cannot defend the land from any outside invasion. Too few troops. How many was the last count? 200 or so?. Now that guyana will start to get the oil money,  the Govt. should start encouraging guyanese from every ethnicity to join. But of course, dem coolies bai nah gon want guh. Strange how they can wake up 4 ' o clock in the morning to cut cane or plant rice in the hot biling sun but they cant wake up at 5 am to run 5 miles at Tacama What's wrong with dis picture.

Actually, with the proper weapons and equipment, they can mount a proper and effective defense. The problem is we don't have the money for those defense systems. If I am correct, troop strength should be around 3-4,000. Think it was around 7000 when augmented with National Service  and People's Militia Units.

Sheik, most people in the Corentyne would not be able to handle the city life. Like the city dwellers, they have established a life style that is hard for them to change. I am telling you from experience.  They like their simple way of living.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they go straight to Congress Place.
