Thirty-eight-year-old businessman Ryan Sugrim, was yesterday remanded to prison for the murder of his wife, Zaila Sugrim.
The charge alleged that Sugrim, between May 11 and May 14, at La Union, West Coast Demerara, murdered Zaila Sugrim, called Zaila Haniff.
Sugrim was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which was read to him at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
The man’s attorney, Sanjeev Datadin, told the court that during the investigation, the police opted to question his client without his counsel present. He stated that they made complaints to the Police Complaints Authority as a result.
Datadin later told the court that he has seen reports in the press that are different from information provided by the police.
The attorney asked the court to warn the media to stop publishing false information. He said that a number of allegations have been made in the press without sufficient evidence to prove it. In asking the court to warn the media, he stated that the continued publishing of false information can lead to his client being tried unfairly.
Datadin then said that he had written to newspapers and to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to prevent the media from publishing false information, as he said that pretrial publicity is dangerous.
Magistrate Zamilla Ally remanded the man to prison and adjourned the matter until June 25, when it will be heard at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
