It is systematic approach to destroy the spirit of the Indian Community and to punish them for wanting a BETTER and more PROGRESSIVE GOvt!!!!
Cane sugar is a dead product! What the hell is wrong with you people? Are you wearing blinds?
The question to you is, were you born brain dead??? Sugar is one of the most consume item on the bloody planet!!
As the enmore estate whistle goes silent after decades of waking up families and signaling the lunch break for sugar workers so are the many cries of hundreds that are jobless. This beacon of hope moved the proud community into a bustling hub of activities. Lack of foresight and management with the ever changing global trend has left us in this quagmire. Now with an uncertain future a community weigh its options. As a son of this beautiful place I remain hopeful that we will rise above this adversity.
Its a desire by this Afro government that is short sighted to punish Indo .. little do they know , Indians are resilient people with strong culture, the closer of sugar estate will back fire against their own people... time will tell.
Enmore estate is a very historic place. I have ancestors who were born there. Some of their names have been recorded in the history of Guyana.
Sugar is dead...but the workers need to be compensated justly...perhaps some of the oil money should also go to them, as well as estate lands that now becomes available.

You really think so? The PNC now has an historic opportunity to ethnically cleanse Guyana to the point where Indians are below critical mass. Maybe the PPP should change itâs name and seek broader appeal!

Which planet are you on? 1. CANE sugar is dead and replaced by beet sugar. 2. There is a massive global movement against sugar of any kind because sugar is bad for your health.
You should stop accusing people of being brain dead and start your brand new brain because like it's still in plastic bag.

Nonsense, what you think they use to make rum? Even DDL complaining that your jackass govt getting rid of the industry. Sugar is still highly consumed in soda's, candy etc, albeit at a reduced rate but nevertheless still in significant quantities.
I donât remember DDL kicking up a storm until now. Some coolies donât move till the fire is on their own backsides then they want solidarity. DDL view themselves above rustic cane cutters. Indians will always be trampled upon. Divide and conquer!

The mad scramble for the assets of the sugar estates has begun. Theft, giveaways, and kickbacks are underway. When those in authority have what they want, the rest will be auctioned.

Right... so the brain alive crew does not recognize the reduction in demand impacting reduction in supply. Put your two brains together and let us know how profitable Guyana's sugar has been the last decade, maybe two. Bear in mind the subsidies that have been discontinued. Feel free to tap into the brains of the other idiots.

That doesn't take much thought. Are the estates earning enough revenue from DDL to maintain profitability? It's a pity that you guys are so blinded by racism and hatred to not think clearly. Makes you look stupid.
The simple answer is that the remaining estates cannot produce enough molasses to keep DDL in full operation. Rum is becoming a dwindling and eventually extinct Industry from Guyana.

READ THIS ANTA.
Worried that governmentâs downsizing of the state-owned Guyana Sugar Corporation would have negatively impact on rum production, the privately-owned Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) said it is considering investing in the sugar industry to keep molasses production afloat.
âIn light of this shortfall, DDL has been actively exploring its potential role in the future of the sugarcane industry, and has executed a high-level technical and economic feasibility study on innovative approaches to use the existing sugar assets to meet the current and future needs for molasses for an expanding distilling industry,â the company said.
The company noted that while Guyanaâs total molasses production is pegged at 52,000 tonnes, there would be an 18,000 tonne shortfall in 2018 to satisfy a projected increase in distillery production by a further 25 percent over 2017.
DDL noted that its international marketing is paying off but now, the company would suffer a shortfall in molasses and the cash-strapped Guysuco would âin turn is a significant source of cash flowâ for its operations.
âWith the impending closure of sugar estates, there will be a considerable short-fall in molasses availability, which is directly related to the reduced projection of sugar production,â DDL said.
FLASH BACK: President David Granger signing off on several casks of 50-year old Demerara Rum that will be stored for another 25 yearsâGuyanaâs Diamond Jubilee. The 50-year old rum has been produced by Demerara Distillers Limited in honour of Guyanaâs 50th Independence Anniversary on May 26, 2016
The rum and beverage company noted that Guysuco has set a sugar production target of 115,000 tons at the three estates- Uitvlugt, Blairmont and Albion- currently earmarked to remain in operation, with molasses production being pegged at 52,000 tons.
DDL said its initial assessment of its distillery production for 2017 shows that is has surpassed projections, with an increase of 30% over 2016.
DDL said it welcomed the comments from Minister of State, Joseph Harmon last week, indicating that the government is still open to options that keep the GuySuCo estates operational until arrangements are finalised for them to be privatised.
DDL Chairman, Komal Samaroo, said that âwe are optimistic that the Government of Guyana understands what is at stake, not just for the sugarcane industry, but for all other stakeholders that are a part of the GuySuCo value chain, including the many thousands who are directly and indirectly involved in the production, distribution and sale of DDLâs value-added products, both locally and internationally.â
DDL recalled that President David Granger had said at the Launching of DDLâs Special Edition 50th Anniversary El Dorado Rum in April 2016, when he said, âGuyanaâs rum industry is precious; it must be protected and preserved in the face of peril. Workersâ jobs and the livelihood of those who indirectly depend on the industry are at stake. The loss of foreign exchange and excise earnings by the industry can result in severe problems in our economy. Guyanaâs rums are an important economic sub-sector. It is in the national interest to ensure the survival and sustainability of this industry and the Government of Guyana is committed to supporting this industry.â
The company said given the fact that the performance of the distilling industry in 2017 has been a bright spot for the local economy, building on the success of El Dorado â one of Guyanaâs few, truly internationally-renowned brands â the imperative of finding compelling solutions to guarantee its future sustainability goes without saying.
âDDL is committed to playing an active role in forging the next steps for survival, and has been engaging all stakeholders, including the Government of Guyana.â
During a recent visit in October 2017 to DDLâs facilities by Prime Minister Moses Nagamatoo and Minister of Business Donomic Gaskin, the matter of molasses supply was raised. In remarks after the tour, Prime Minister Moses Nagamatoo offered assurances that molasses supply for DDL would be secure. He said, âThose who are saying that sugar is dead, or will be dead, should come and take a tour of DDLâs bond and factory, there is abundant need for molasses âĶ so I donât see today any sign of the death of the sugar industry. Guyana will continue producing sugar once there is a need for molasses.â
Minister Gaskin, commenting at the same event, said that âit was good to get a walk through and get a glimpse of their manufacturing facilities,â he commended DDL as âone of the biggest value-added companies in Guyana and probably Guyanaâs most successful value-added company.â
Upon announcement by DDL Chairman Komal Samaroo of the companyâs three-year $10 billion investment programme, Minister Gaskin wished the company well with its expansion plans and said that âthe government stands ready to give support to DDL wherever possible.â
This support is crucial in recognition of the jobs to be created and the significant increase in taxes contributed to the national economy from greater earnings. In 2016, the DDL Group paid $1.9 billion in taxes, excluding VAT, and is project to pay in excess of $2.2 billion for 2017 based on its performance.

Why are they not interested in building more factories? If revenue earned from DDL is so much why has the sugar industry been running at a deficit? Are you willing to put your tax dollars to bolster the industry and pay wages?

What makes you think I don't? I was born and raised on a sugar estate. But that is irrelevant and you're missing the point. Sugar is not a viable industry. Revenue from DDL is not enough to maintain the number of factories in Guyana. Should the government implement a plan to aid the now unemployed? Of course. My suggestion is to allocate land to the people, similar to how people were given land in the polders, and support agriculture divestment to various produce. Do you know how valuable is the spice market?
Is the government wrong to not implement a plan for the livelihood of sugar workers? Of course. But I don't see you guys addressing that. All you're doing is screaming about the PNC govt victimizing Indians.
Cane sugar as a household sweetener is dead. No amount of screaming at the govt will change that. It died long before 2015. Let's address the issue of taking care of the workers and their families and the future of agriculture in Guyana.

Presently ,in Toronto you can't find El Dorado rum in the LCBO shops, also the Duty Free shops don't have Guyana Rum, when asked, I was told that there is a shortage. The Sarnia Duty Free and Windsor Duty free shops have no Guyana rum for over three months, I think in due time the prices will go up as the demand increases.

DDL doesn't have a problem. They have a decision to make. They can buy estates to ensure a reliable supply of molasses.
The EU has already stated that they no longer want ACP sugar. Jamaica produces enough sugar/molasses for their own needs so its only the T&T market that will be available.

DDL eying Enmore estate
-in bid to ensure molasses supply
In a bid to secure molasses for its rum production, Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) has expressed interest in securing some assets of GuySuCo and sources close to the process say that its interest is in owning the Enmore Sugar Estate.
âDDL has submitted a proposal of its intentions to secure Enmore and it is to secure their molasses needs,â an official told Stabroek News.
However, the companyâs Public Relations Officer Alex Graham would only say that an Expression of Interest (EOI) was submitted to the Special Purpose Unit (SPU), the body set up by the government to handle the divestment and privatization of GuySuCoâs assetsâĶ..
