Santa Rosa cops Miss Moruca Expo 2012- as expo celebrates its 7th year

Sarah Browne of Santa Rosa outgraced four other contestants and emerged Miss Moruca Expo 2012as the Moruca Exposition was staged for the 7th year.
The Exposition held over two days (July 20-21) allows for the region’s residents to come together for merriment and exhibit their culture and talent in a series of events staged in the Santa Rosa community.

Activities included swimming, canoeing and tug-o-war competitions at Cabucalli as well as a road race.
Spin-top spinning, archery, slingshot-shooting, fish-trap demonstrations, cassava-making, paddle and craft-making, volley ball and 5-a-side football were among some of the activities held on the second day with the evening being usedfor the much anticipated Miss Moruca contest, the highlight of the Expo and staged at the Kumaka Playfield, Santa Rosa.

This year saw four young beauties in front of the biggest crowd ever vying for the crown. The contestants were involved in five segment of competition; traditional wear, swim wear, evening gown, talent and an intelligence test with Sarah Browne emerging this year’s queen, Nikita Lewis (Waramuri,) Sabrina Rahaman (Kwebanna) and Roamona Charles (Assakata) placing first, second and third respectively.

This is the second consecutive year that a beauty from Santa Rosa has walked away with the crown. The 2011 queen, Miss Simone Fredricks is also from the Santa Rosa community.
Moruca Expo is supported by the government ministries including the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs and the Ministry of Culture as part of the government’s support of the region and showcasing of its continuing development.

The event is also supported by private companies including Digicel.
Representatives from these ministries and organizations were present at the event and presented trophies and money to the contestants of the pageant.
They also participated in the novelty games during the events and distributed flyers and information from their respective ministries.

The Ministry of Tourism provided each contestant with a bouquet and a cheque of $5000.
The Amerindian Affairs Ministry provided a hamper to the Miss Moruca Queen. The Queen also received $60000 from Digicel.
An after-party and lime followed the pageant and ran into the night.
