Top pupils pose with Headmaster of Saraswat Primary School

The Saraswat Canadian Foundation last Friday awarded 14 pupils the sum of $164,000 during the annual prize –giving and awards ceremony hosted by the Saraswat Primary School located in De Willem, West Coast Demerara.

The monetary awards were handed over to the top three pupils at the National Grade 2, 4 and 6 Assessments. The recipients also included the top pupil at the National Grade 9 assessment, the top male and female athlete and the best performer (within the community) at the CXC examination.

Each pupil received between $10,000 and $15,000, presented by the foundation’s local representative, Mr Deonarine Prashad.
Head teacher of the school, Mr. Esau Dookie, expressed sentiments to the foundation which he noted has been providing financial support to the school over the last ten years.

He also disclosed that he has received a pledge of $50,000 from Minister Irfaan Ali.

Noting that the financial support has propelled pupils’ performances towards a higher level, Dookie stated that this gesture has resulted in a marked improvement of the school’s performance at the regional level.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Mr. Nigel Dharamlall, in his feature address, noted that peoples’ development is the central focus of government.

He told the gathering that government’s interventions have led to a transformation of the education sector, while noting that education is the most valuable asset. Dharamlall pointed to the One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) project as a testimony to the importance government attaches to education, especially in the field of Information Communication Technology.

Dharamlall congratulated parents, teachers and the graduating class, stating that today’s children are the leaders of tomorrow. He urged parents to ensure their children attend school regularly and punctually.

Noting that graduation is only a transition from one stage to another, Dharamlall stated that children must aspire to higher levels. He however cautioned that such aspiration can only be achieved when children are given the necessary support and guidance by their parents, teachers and society in general.
