Mr. Bob Persaud
Even as the widow and son of late Agriculture Minister, Satyadeow Sawh were receiving a posthumous National Award on his behalf, one of his brothers-in-law whose wife was also shot dead by gunmen five years ago was endorsing the Alliance For Change (AFC).
Toronto-based Bob Persaud also welcomed signals by Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) long-serving central committee member, Moses Nagamootoo to break ranks and join the AFC.
Persaud publicly endorsed the AFC at a fund-raising dinner Friday night at Destiny Banquet Hall, Woodbridge Ontario, saying that the time has come to change Guyana as a country where rampant crime, corruption and drug trafficking exist unlike even during the Forbes Burnham dictatorship.
“The PPP had nineteen years to correct what Burnham did and they failed in my opinion, they failed miserably actually,” he told Demerara Waves Online News ( www.demwaves.com ).
While noting that he has never been associated with the incumbent Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) or any other political party, Persaud dismissed questions that Satyadeow Sawh would have been disappointed at his endorsement of the AFC.
Mrs. Sattie Sawh and her son receiving the award from President Jagdeo.
“Sash Sawh was a decent man like I think I am, we always respected each other’s opinion- we always did. It would be unconscionable for me to endorse the PPP given what I know now about them,” said Persaud who is from Cotton Tree Village, Berbice.
Sawh and and his siblings Rajpat Rai and Phulmattie Persaud and security guard Kurtis Robertson were gunned down at the Sawhs’ La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara residence in April, 2006.
He explained that he endorsed the AFC because he believes that they are fighting for change like what the PPP did when Burnham was in power.
Asked how he felt endorsing the AFC while hours earlier Sawh’s wife and son received, Persaud contended that the PPP was “using” the name of the former member of the Association of Concerned Guyanese (ACG).
Persaud plans to appeal to Nagamootoo, one of his former teachers, to join the AFC to give it credibility and effect national change. He does not believe that Nagamootoo’s remarks back in 2006 at the PPP’s Good Hope Rally that he would never betray Dr. Jagan’s party would work backfire on him in 2011.
“I don’t think Dr. Jagan betrayed him and he betrayed Dr. Jagan and I don’t see any reason why he should not effect changes in another party along Dr. Jagan’s doctrine which he can,” said Persaud who has lived in Canada since 1972.
Persaud is the latest person to endorse the AFC; the others are Richard Vanwest Charles of the PNCR and Rajendra Bissessar formerly of the PPP.
On the PPP's side, they have so far received endorsements from Head of the Health Sciences Department of the University of Guyana, Dr. Emmanuel Cummings; Gillian Burton formerly of the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) and former treason accused, Philip Bynoe.
PPP campaign spokesman, Robert Persaud has said there would be more surprise-endorsements in the coming days.
