The thousands of fans that converged at Lake Mainstay Resort, Essequibo Coast on Sunday to witness its 17th annual Regatta were given much to cheer about as Dave Scott and Clint Gonsalves emerged champion drivers in their respective categories.
Scott of Bartica chalked up eight points to take Group A title, while Gonsalves of Pomeroon emerged as the best driver from Group B with nine points.
Dubbed as the βclash of the daredevilsβ, the event got underway following an opening ceremony which was attended by minister of Social Cohesion Dr. George Norton and members of the region two tourism committee among others.
Clint Gonsalves powered his way victory in the first event of the day which was the 40 HP 3 laps, while Jose Jardine of Bartica placed second and Ramnarace Dookie of West Demerara was third.
Neil Gonsalves gave Pomeroon more glory when he took the honours in the 6 laps Open race ahead of Dave Scott and Jose Jardine of Bartica.
Pomeroon drivers continued to dominate the early proceedings as Clint Gonsalves overpowered his rivals to capture the next event which was the 4 laps 90HP ahead of Jardine and Danny Benjamin of Bartica in that order.
Scott gave Bartica their first victory as he won the 5 laps 200HP event ahead of Clint Gonsalves (2nd) and Jose Jardine (3rd) before Naleni Baharally won the female 15HP 2 laps; Denesha Mandy placed second and Drupattie Persaud third.
Clint Gonsalves was again in winnersβ lane when he captured the 90HP 4 laps race, while Jardine finished second and Benjamin third. Gonsalves then won the 3 laps 40HP ahead of Benjamin and Dookie respectively.
The 15HP 2 laps male race was taken by Lennox Baharall, while Mannie took the runner up spot and Chavez Jabbar third. Scott emerged winner in the 5 laps 200HP event, while Jardine was second and Clint Gonsalves third.
The male 200m male canoeing was won by Sanjeev of Pomeroon, Joey Jabbar and Robin Ramdeen finished second and third in that order, while the female equivalent was taken by Carla Ramdeen, Naleni Baharally and Lawretta Savory all of Pomeroon.
The Orin Bell memorial race-90HP five laps was won by Clint Gonsalves; Jardine placed second and Benjamin third. Dorius Williams claimed the 200m Open swim race, while Lloyd Ward was second and Sanjeev Ramdeen third.
The six laps Open race was won by Scott, while Jardine was second and Benjamin was third all of Bartica.
