A sea defence breach in the Canje Creek, and an overburdened koker have resulted in immense flooding that has wreaked havoc on residents of Tucber, Nurseville and Winkel in New Amsterdam.

Coupled with unusual Spring tides, the residents are reeling from flooded yards, living rooms and homes. According to the residents, the Regional officials effected temporary repairs to the breach in August, using soft mud, but the breach gave way again some time on Tuesday.

Esther Griffith lives right next to the koker. She said that this was the first time it has happened. “I was made to understand by the koker man that there is a sea defence breach. They did a temporary sealing last month and due to this high tide, other parts have broken away, causing this heavy flooding.”

Carmen Pluck of Lot 154 Tucber was at her wits’ end since her entire home was flooded.
“I am sick of this situation because, the bedroom, the kitchen, living room, all over covered with water. I spoke with the Chairman, and he said they are going to come, and up to now, nobody has come to my rescue.”

A resident of Tucber nearly slips and falls in the flooded waters on Tuesday afternoon

“Where are we going to sleep? The things are all damaged, as you can see. And no help; nobody has come to help or advise, or spray or nothing, and I understand that we have to deal with this until Sunday. I had to clean all the mud that was in the house and in the yard and bap—here comes the water again.

“Who am I going to complain to?” she asked.
“This is the sweet Guyana that we are living in, because at least, I am suffering. Nobody is coming to you. They’re not even coming around to see what is going on with your life—nobody, nobody at all!” Pluck said.

“I am fed up; I am tired, and if I have a chance where I can run like everybody, I will run,” she stated.

Lloyda Richmond said that the flood is affecting her very badly. “I cleaned up this morning—take my time and clean up the place—and this is what I come back and reach (pointing to the flood). I am fed up with this nonsense! Thick, thick mud! Like a mud- flat,” she lamented.

“They should try to come and do something to help us here, because this is something overbearing to us. We fed up with this. My grandchildren are asthmatic and they have to deal with this”, she noted.

The entire compound of the Dharm Shala senior citizens’ home at Fort Canje was under water on Tuesday afternoon and the water seemed to be rising as the time went by. The unusual spring tide also resulted in the flooding of the compound of the National

Communications Network (NCN) Berbice Operations which had to pull the plug on their transmission on Tuesday afternoon, as the station suffered several losses as a result of the flood.

The Coordinator of the NCN Berbice Operations, Mr Faizal Jaffarally, told this newspaper on Wednesday morning that he cannot estimate the losses at the station, until a full assessment is carried out.

The compound of the New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) was also flooded and some classes were suspended on Wednesday. Kaieteur News understands that this same occurrence took place in August, and the authorities scampered to deal with it, but apparently they did not do a proper job.

Several attempts to reach Regional Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha for a comment, proved futile.

The Berbice bridge will create silt build up and thus cause the Canje river to overflow its banks. WE see how Crab Island is no longer an Island; the channel that seperated it, is now silted and it's now land locked with Fort Ordinance land.

Guyana is a land of many waters now we get even more. On a serious note, in the Far-East where land is limited due to heavy rain fall, people created substitute, floating land to live, work and plant crops. They use boats as their daily transportation and never care for solid land. Do you think Guyana should adapt to this new survival approach? Rather than blaming the government for poor maintenance of sea defense, let's improvise. Guyana is under sea level, and the problem will only get worse by heavy rain fall. So, what do you suggest?

They should do exactly what you did for your self and family.

To keep Guyana dry, you'll need a sea defense system like that of the Dutch in Holland, but it will cost many millions US$ to build. Maybe the pending oil money will make all things possible. That may be the PPP major undertaken in the next five years.

PPP has failed region 5 and 6 and it seems like this is the echoing story from the rest of the regions. They have focused so much on stealing and building their palaces that they forgot the people and we have fundamentally forgotten why we were elected in the first place.

NDIA was at one point recently allocated less money than the propaganda apparatus at GINA, Chronicle and NCN.

We have continued to pour money into all sorts of shit or waste of time operations out of Office of the President rather than trying to make a difference in the lives of the people.

We are basically repeating all the mistakes of the PNC, taking their play book and showing the people how to F it up a second time around with style.

NIS bankrupt - Why?

We are giving loans to buddys to build a hotel and not getting a dime back so why do this? the whole World cup thing was a total flop.

Carifiasco X big big spend - flop

Now we are spending money on concerts and bringing in entertainers for Robert Persaud and his wife to Partay with and post pictures of themselves and these entertainers on facebook. WTF is going on with this PPP govt?

Floods much higher than in 2005 occured in Guyana in the 1800's ( eighteen hundred ) and I presented detailed explanations with information on GNI at the time of the 2005 incidents.

Floods also occur in numerous countries almost on a yearly basis, most recently with destructions occuring in the USA, Asia, Canada, Europe, Africa, etc.

At times of these occurrences, there are those who combine their efforts to assist where possibe while there are others who babble with nonsense.

The Berbice River floating bridge is situated near the confluence of the Berbice River and the Canje Creek where because of the movement of the water current considerable amount of silting takes place....

This fact was recognised by the Indian team of surveyors who surveyed the area in early 1994 after Dr.Jagan's successful state visit to India in December 1993....the Indian government approved a grant of four million dollars to finance this survey....as a result of the survey the professional recommendation was to locate a permanent bridge at the point where Everton on the East Bank of Berbice and Itacha on the West Bank of Berbice are located....also this area represents the narrowest point on the flow of the river....

It is a big question why the Jagdeo administration saw it fit to scuttle those recommendations ?

From the general area where the flooding is reported in New Amsterdam I am surprised that the Berbice Hospital compound was not affected....or was it affected and no coverage was given to it ?
