A team comprising members of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard (CG) will be meeting with the fishermen who were recently attacked by pirates in the Pomeroon River on February 2.

Martime Department, Harbour Master, Velton Skeete today said that discussions at this meeting will focus on the way forward with regards to ensuring that fishing, the livelihood of a significant number of people in Guyana, is done in a more protected manner; key among which is the provision of better security with the establishment of a structured check-in-point.
The Maritime Department continues to focus on the matter; while the police are gathering information from the rescued men, who are cooperating and providing details with regards to what transpired.
All of the fishermen are accounted for; 15 were rescued and no lives were lost but two boats were badly wrecked in the attack. Nevertheless, another aerial reconnaissance was conducted in the Pomeroon River to determine whether more fishermen were stranded, but none was spotted.
Skeete added that the implementation of the Global Positioning System (GPS) on fishing boats is also being considered so as to be able to identify the location of fishing crews in the event of an incident such as a pirate attack. This will enable the relevant authorities to respond more promptly and efficiently.
Approximately 15 fishing boats with a total number of 19 crew men were attacked between February 3 to 4, off the coast of the Pomeroon River. Subsequently that day, the Maritime Search and Rescue Centre was activated and, wiith the help of the police and the army coastguard, the centre was able to rescue three persons.
Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn is calling on anyone with information on the recent pirate activity, or who has suspicions of any illegal activity which may be linked to the latest pirate attack, to contact the nearest police station, the Coast Guard and or the Maritime Administration.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Police Force in a press release said that a fishing crew of four, Ganeshwar Reddy, Shafeek Khan, β€˜Rackoo’, and Kumar, left in a fishing vessel from the Meadow Bank Wharf with an additional outboard engine to render assistance to one of the fishing crews that was attacked by pirates in Pomeroon River.
Subsequent reports indicate that the boat capsized somewhere off the Suddie Coast due to heavy rainfall and rough waters on Saturday night.. Reddy managed to reach ashore on the Essequibo Coast yesterday and has since been admitted a patient at the Suddie Hospital.
Searches are being conducted by the Joint Services assisted by public spirited persons for the other three men who were onboard the vessel.

Instead of using unfortunate events like this to gain political mileage our elected politicians can work to gether to draft a new legislation to combat this type of criminal activity. If gov't see themselves as making progress when people make progress then they would very responsive to the economic and fiancial needs of those who produce in our society.

Albert why don't you shut your trap for a change. Do you represent the PPP govt to be making these absurd claims. The police can not guarantee protection of fishermen on the vast seas, it is just too much territory to cover. There have been suggestions by govt to have fishermen carry radio, gps and other communication equipment but the fishermen claimed it was too expensive and chose to go to sea and take the chance of being victimized.

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Bell 412 helicopter and a Cessna aircraft that was abandoned several years ago by drug dealers in the interior will be refurbished to help provide air surveillance as government takes steps to beef up its fight against rampant sea piracy.
This announcement was made by Cabinet Secretary, Dr Roger Luncheon at a post-cabinet media briefing at the Office of the President on yesterday. Dr Luncheon disclosed that air and sea surveillance will be heightened in a systematic and continuous manner to remedy the deteriorating piracy situation. He explained that the GDF Air Corps recapitalisation that has failed to perform as expected by the administration will be revitalised.
β€œWith renewed focus on completion of the recapitalisation, the re-entry into serviceability of the BEL 412 helicopter and entry and serviceability of the Cessna aircraft that was abandoned at Kwapau a number of years ago. That indeed both land and air surveillance could become a fix part of the air course mandate,” Luncheon added.

Just shut yuh kakahole and stop insulting people intelegence. Even if they have a radio or Gps, the administration does not have resoures to respond to a 911 call a few blocks from a police station, how the hell they will respond to a pirate attack at sea...

Dr Luncheon noted that the routine maritime patrols that exist will be complemented by vessels that will be acquired by the GDF and the Guyana Police Force, in an effort to enhance the system. The head of the presidential secretariat posited that the entire situation being faced by fishermen begs for relief and more inputs from law enforcers.
