Deputy Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud will take over the reins of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) from April 1, well-placed sources said.
The usually reliable sources said Police Commissioner Leroy Brumell has been given one month to hand over to Persaud,50, who is currently responsible for Law Enforcement.
Brumell’s last day should have been Friday but, according to sources, he would remain on the job until March 31.
Opposition Leader David Granger is already on record as saying that when Brumell reached retirement age, he should leave the post.

Persaud, the holder of a Bsc. Degree in Public Management and a Post Graduate Diploma in International Studies and a Certificate Course for Senior Executives in National and International Security from Harvard University.
Persaud was Head of the Narcotics Branch, Secretary to the Joint Anti-Narcotic Operations Committee, Chairman o the Caribbean Working Group of the International Drug Conference and Chairman of the Caricom Standing Committee on Intelligence.

Persaud pursued the Stand Officers Course at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and investigating courses at the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Scottish Police College.
Brumell’s departure from the force came almost four months after he was confirmed as the top cop. He succeeded Henry Greene who stepped down from the post after he was disgraced by a rape allegation. He was not charged based on a High Court ruling, although the Director of Public Prosecutions had recommended that he face the courts.

Greene subsequently died in a road accident on the West Coast Demerara.

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Government will be extending the time for Guyana’s Commissioner of Police, Leroy Brumell, whose tenure came to an end on February 8.

This extension will last until the appropriate mechanism is in place to appoint the next Police Commissioner – Seelall Persaud – in accordance with the constitution.

The mechanism includes the establishment of the Police Service Commission and consultations with the Leader of the Opposition, David Granger.

When contacted on Friday evening (February 28), Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee did not confirm or deny Persaud’s appointment. All the Minister would say, β€œAfter Brumell is Persaud.”

Additionally, Minister Rohee could not say how soon the consultations with the Opposition Leader will take place.

Brumell was sworn in as the 30th Police Commissioner in October 2013 after acting in the post for approximately two years, following the resignation of the late Henry Green. He joined the Force some 36 years.

His retirement comes at a time when the Force is undergoing what is commonly being referred to as a modernization process.

Earlier this month, Brumell told iNews that he plans to humbly give up the post when the time comes. β€œWhen my time comes I will go,” he had said.

It was reported in one section of the media that both President Donald Ramotar and Opposition Leader David Granger is opposed to a public application process for the filling of the position.

Granger had reportedly advised that Brumell leaves when his time comes.
