Guyana’s females had a strong showing on the first day of the 2017 NLC Senior Caribbean Squash Championships. Leading the charge was women’s team captain Ashley Khalil who advanced with a straight set win over her Bermudian opponent. Also advancing was Larissa Wiltshire who had to fight hard to overcome Alexandra Yearwood of Trinidad in five close games. Mary Fung-A-Fat and Taylor Fernandes also advanced to the quarterfinals.
Khalil and Fung-A-Fat are the 3th and 4rh seeds on the Women’s side.
Khalil was to take on Charlotte Knaggs (TT), while Fernandes was set to take on reigning Caribbean Champion, Meagan Best (Barbados). Fung-A-Fat and Wiltshire were set play each other thereby guaranteeing a Guyanese in tomorrow’s semi-final.
On the Men’s side, Guyana sole quarter-finalist is Jason Khalil who overcame a strong Kevin Bailey (OECS) challenge to advance to his first Caribbean senior men’s quarter-final. He will take on Joe Chapman (OECS) for a place in the semi-final. The other three members of the Men’s team playing in the event lost out in the main draw but are in the consolation rounds. Nyron Joseph is in the 9-16 consolation, while Shomari Wiltshire and Jean Claude Jeffery have advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation round.
