The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Bartica District Hospital, coordinated a Remote Area Medical (R.A.M.) outreach in Region Seven. The RAM’s programme is managed by a non government agency that recruits volunteer surgeons from the various states in the USA to come to Guyana for the outreach.
The programme is a part of an ongoing outreach by the Ministry since 2008; this fulfills part of the strategy of access to health care for all.
The team included Dr. Nadaf, Dr. Kulkarni, Dr.Maddiwar, and Dr. Kharwadkar –General Surgeons. Pediatricians are Dr. Puranik and Dr. Asha Kharwadkar. Ms. Katy Irish – Chief Nurse, Ms. Jean Venerable – Anesthetic Nurse, Mr. Terrance Trapnell – Coordinator/Pilot and Mrs. Maddiwar.
Over the past two days several minor surgeries were successfully done including removal of cysts, and hernias. These successful surgeries were the first to have been conducted within the past five years. The Bartica Hospital Theater had been sitting idle for almost a decade.

Persons who benefitted were drawn from Bartica as well as other riverain communities. The first surgery scheduled was Ms. Alexis De Souza from Caribese Hill, a mother of three with a growth on her wrist. No complications have been encountered so far with any of the surgeries.
This outreach will be an initiative to support local surgeries in various regions to reduce some of the pressure on the patient facilities in Georgetown. Surgeries available include hernias, hydrocele and gall stones. This outreach was stationed in Lethem, Region Nine and is scheduled to include Mabaruma, Region One.
Fifty-seven patients were scheduled for surgeries for the duration at the Bartica District Hospital. The RAM team also flew in patients from the Upper Mazaruni District to Bartica for medical attention from the ten person team stationed in Bartica.
Apart from the RAM team, the Ministry will also support local surgeons in putting together a team to travel on outreach from this month end. The surgical teams will visit Lethem, Mabaruma and Bartica quarterly starting next year, once there are at
least 25 patients to be attended to. However, in two weeks time the hospital is expected to have a Cuban-trained resident doctor, Kemraj Kanhai. He has some surgical experience to cater for minor surgeries such as Caesarean sections. At his disposal will be trained anesthetic Nurse Austin stationed at Bartica District Hospital.
Meanwhile the team said that its members were pleased with the equipment with which they worked.
