Masjid in New Amsterdam burgled

…worshippers lament inability to host coming Youman Nabi programme

THE Masjid-An-Nur (mosque) at Providence, Greater New Amsterdam, Berbice has allegedly been burgled, and several wares have been reported missing.President of the Mosque, Feroze Jaffarally, told the Guyana Chronicle that on December 14, 2013, a quantity of wares was lent to a family who hosted a religious function, and those items were returned on the following day and secured in a store room in the compound of the masjid.
“Since that time, no one went into the store room. However, on New Year’s Day, another family came to borrow our wares, and it was that time we (members of the mosque) discovered that the store room lock was broken and all the items were missing,” he related.
Three hundred ware plates and cups, thirty-two huge enamel basins, four enamel buckets with covers, five stand fans, two tarpaulins, one large water pitcher, and a stand-by generator donated by an overseas-based Guyanese and valued at $750,000 have all been discovered missing.
Subsequent investigations around the community led to the door of a character who is known to the police. He was arrested, but subsequently released. Following further investigations, the suspect was again nabbed by the lawmen on Monday, and is currently in custody assisting with further investigations.

CANNOT HOST YOUMAN NABI PROGRAMME
The distraught President of the Mosque pointed out that, with the absence of the items, the administration of the place of worship would be unable to host a Youman Nabi religious programme to mark the birth anniversary of the Islamic Holy Prophet Muhammad on January 14, a national holiday.
“We cannot host our guests at this time because all those items that were stolen were acquired for such events. It is sad that we have to seek other alternatives due to this act of sacrilege,” he regretfully expressed.
Jaffarally is hoping to recover the stand-by generator, since the cost of replacing it would be insurmountable in the near future.
“I can’t see one person being involved in this, and we at the masjid are of the opinion that whoever perpetrated this act had accomplices. A generator is not an easy thing for a single person to handle; and we hope that we can at least recover it, because it was a very valuable gift that served us well, especially during the holy month of Ramadan,” he lamented.

The afc/pnc have reached a new low. To steal from a mosque for political fund raising is unforgivable. I don't understand why their supporters don't condemn this type of fund raising activities.

The police has not released the identity of the culprit. Normally that indicates that it a PPP insider who is involved. DrugB's family have recently been implicated in a number of seedy criminal activities. It would not come as a surprise if they are again the ones involve din this audacious theft.

QUOTE: "Three hundred ware plates and cups, thirty-two huge enamel basins, four enamel buckets with covers, five stand fans, two tarpaulins, one large water pitcher, and a stand-by generator...."

In the past, I knew some Hindu temples used to ID their wares, utensils and other moveable property with paint or engraving. I assume Muslim mosques do the same.

In this particular theft case in Berbice, the police and the community shouldn't have a problem recovering the stolen items if they were suitably marked.

I am certain that you and this Drugb character share in the spoils along with your buddies in the afc/pnc.

As Gilbacka suggested let them put some kind of mark on it.

Instead of sending money to buy cheap Chinese versions the money should be awarded to a small Guyanese pottery artist to make custom dishes with an approved design by the Masjid and its own logo baked in. That would serve to replace the utensils and help a local potter.

This exposes how much you, a white man, know about Guyana. There are no local potter artists, its a dead art in Guyana.

At least he recognizes that the utensils that are imported from China into Guyana are of the lowest quality.

Wifey was just there last month for her brother's funeral and she said it seems like China is sending the bottm grade of exports to Guynaa.

A mark of civilization is its pottery. Every culture makes pottery. When I was growing up there was an old man who made pottery albeit not fine pottery. Every murti maker can switch to pottery in an instant if they get the glazes. They have the clay all around them. My first memories in London with my mom was going pottery class with her.  I am sure

good time to start  a little kilm. I see here in Alexandria they make extremely wonderful stuff in little stores. The same in Philly. I am sure that it is a fine art and one is better with experience but I seen kids doing it as interns from the local arts college. I went once and designed my own cups and had them fire it. My very first memories included going with my mom to her pottery class. I am sure that there are many Guyanese with the skill.

Some of those remittance cheques are payment for the drugs that the PPP mules smuggle out of Guyana. The PPP is objecting to money laundering controls, otherwise those hidden drugs payments are going to stick out as red flags.

You are stuck in the past, the artifacts of tomorrow will be steel, micro chips, old macbooks, soda cans, old cars, washing machines and other modern conveniences.

It will continue to be that which persists and of those on the list only ceramics will remain in a 1000 years.
