– Increase in prices for sugar is an added burden to consumers
Several retailers of packaged rice and sugar is not happy with the recent increases and in some cases, shortages which is affecting the local market.
Over fifteen (15) businessmen have complained to Citizens’ Report last week, pointing out that they usually purchase between 30 to 40 – 10KG bags of packaged rice per week.
According to the businessmen, the price went up by $20 per bag around two weeks ago. However, a few days later the retailers were informed by wholesalers who supply them that they could not access the packaged rice from their respective millers.
When Citizens’ Report contacted a retailer this morning, he stressed that the situation has not changed. He also lamented that apart from the shortage and increase in cost for packaged rice, sugar has also increased, “…we are paying almost a $200 increase on a case of 1KG Demerara Gold and this cost will have to be passed on to buyers. It is becoming tough to do business here.”
The man noted that consumers are complaining and are accusing retailers of unjustly increasing prices because they are not aware that the increases are coming from the producers and are being passed down to the end user.
