Six Guyanese crew members aboard the Guyana-registered vessel, Vicky B, were Friday still in St. Lucia police custody in connection with the discovery of large quantities of marijuana, cocaine ammunition and grenades.

However, a Guyanese football promoter was released on bail on possession of gun and ammunition charges and the country's Director of Yachting questioned and released ithout charge.

Demerara Waves Online News ( www.demwaves.com) was told by a local law enforcement source that those detained include Noel Persaud, Hardat Sookram, Satesh Ramkissoon and Rushel Sam.

The Guyana-registered Vicky B bears the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) number 5239199.

Police sources said the six would no longer be arraigned on Friday and would remain in custody pending further investigations.

The fate of the vessel would be determined by the court, said Deputy Police Commissioner, Moses Charles.

The St. Lucia Police force said in a statement on Thursday that on Saturday the 24th of September, 2011, about 10:30pm, a combined unit of police officers intercepted a Cargo Ship, six nautical miles off Soufriere.

A thorough search was conducted and police recovered several items which include 30 kilos of cocaine, 46 kilos of cannabis, one 12-gauge shotgun, 15 rounds of 12-gauge ammunition, 35 rounds of 9mm ammunition and five military explosive grenades which were all concealed in a compartment at the extreme front of the ship which is currently in the custody of the police.

There were six Guyanese nationals onboard the ship who were all arrested and taken into police custody, pending various charges.

Football promoter, Guyanese David β€˜Shakes; Christopher and his wife were each placed on 10,000 Eastern Caribbean dollars bail each in connection with the discovery of a firearm and ammunition at his home. Investigators suspect a link between Christopher and the discovery of the drugs and other illegal items.

Christopher is also a close associate of the Director of Yachting, Cuthbert Didier. He was questioned, released without charge and went public to clear his name.

Christopher worked with Didier when the latter was head of the Rodney Bay Marina.

Quite remarkable that there is no discussion on this since this bit of news broke yesterday. In former times, there would have been two or three forum pages on this by now. A true reflection of how things are and where folk's focus lie.
