A 43-year-old man has confessed to killing his 73-year-old mother by setting her bed alight on Christmas Day as she slept.

Mengree Dahri called ‘Gladys’, of 143 Gale Street, Annandale, East Coast Demerara, succumbed around 06.30 hrs yesterday from severe burns she had sustained.

Police said that Dahri and her son, who is said to be an alcoholic, lived at the same property.

At around 10:00 hours on Christmas Day, a resident observed smoke emanating from the bottom flat of the two-storey house.

On checking, the resident found the elderly woman on a bed which was engulfed in flames.

“With the assistance of public-spirited persons she was evacuated and the fire extinguished,” a release stated.

Police said that the son, who is in custody and is said to be an alcoholic has admitted to setting the fire.

A post mortem is expected to be done today.

This is horrible. I am always afraid that we all have many lit fuses that we may not know about. This particular case with his alcoholism is not normal but even as normal as our surrounding may seem, it is always a good idea to not take it for granted.

This incident and all similar incidents that involved alcohol is a disease that's taking Guyana by storm. Instead of banning smoking in public, they should ban drinking and save people's lives. Drinking responsibly is not part of Guyanese social theme. Them want to dakole till rum done.

I feel back in the day, your place was not like that. I remember how we cleaned up the yard on Saturdays and put all the trash in a pit and burnt it.

This is the Market Rd / Annandale . The house appears to be abandon ... cause the son is a alcoholic , separated from his wife and kids . As per the neighbours , he drinks all day .

All the debris is floating from clog drains , it’s been raining for the last 6 days non stop.

the council do not cleans the drains properly . Neighbouring village of Buxton is well drain as all the resources is spend in Afro neighbourhood .

music is blaring all night from Buxton from a dance hall constructed by PPP government for Buxtonians .

guys believe when I said PPP develop Afro neighbourhood more than Indians . The Afro racist punks on this site speaks from their rear ... these bannas never satisfy and knows nothing .

However, Afro and Indians gets along well ... until election comes around .

3. Red flashing stop sign ... no vehicle stops, but the drivers understand each other .. they drive midway on the rd forcing the coming traffic to stop .. and this is normal .

4. Pedestrians hardly uses pedestrian crossing , they will ignore he coming traffic and walk across the rd , some with babies in their hands .

5. I saw a driver with a 3 years old sitting on his lap holding on the steering wheel driving on a major public rd .

6. Contractors who cleans canal , leave the debris 2 feet from the canal which then washes back into the clean canal .. this become a on going process , contractors get a full time job and he bribe the council members who turns a blind eye .

Banning alcohol alone will only give rise to bush rum factories.  It needs a more comprehensive approach which the previous govt failed at.  Growing up I remember all this shyte.  Nothing changed, just we see more today with social media.   On social issues PPP was a failure.  Too much corruption and cronyism.  PNC will exploit the situation to their advantage.   PNC will allow what happened in the Black communities in America to happen to the Indian communities in Guyana.  And PPP made their job easier.

Guyana is a one Party state, their political agenda is the same, get in power at all cost, help themselves, and thief. It has become like musical chairs, different bandits robbing the same people. The people should set the agenda for the politicians to follow, if failed apply severe penalty for deception .

Not possible. Both the PPP and PNC practice democratic centralism.

The issue is that rather than dealing with the pathologies that ail segments of the Indo Guyanese community too many PPP supporters pretended that its only blacks who suffer from these issues.

Just read Druggie's endless rants about blacks and how hysterical he becomes when I suggest that he attend to the pathologies which exist within his own community.

Its this need to feel better than blacks which causes many Indians to ignore this issue.

Here you go blaming the PNC.  This problem is a function of the estate culture which developed in Guyana and Trinidad where alcoholism was encouraged  by the colonialist estate managers, who themselves were also alcoholics.  The whole "Rum till I die" culture.

The PPP when it came to power in 1956 DID NOT ADDRESS IT!  In fact they like the old time estate managers probably liked the sugar workers to be intoxicated so that they could be fooled.
