Smalta/MOPH u-12 Girls’ pee wee …MVP Fayon Harry fires South Ruimveldt to championship

St. Angela’s hope of retaining the Smalta/Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) girls’ pee wee football trophy was crushed when the individual brilliance of Fayon Harry, who scored both goals in South Ruimveldt’s victory in the final, overwhelmed the 2016 winners. The final of the two-month competition which is the lone event that sees young female ball weavers going head to in inter-primary school action was contested at the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground on CARIFESTA Avenue yesterday.
Harry’s first goal of her brace came three minutes after the start of the second half and she fired home a penalty in the final minute of the half-hour long game. Harry, the captain and striker of the team displayed superior talent, but the South Ruimveldt team were much more organized than St. Angela’s and they achieved a much deserved victory.
“Our coach told us to win, play hard and win the game not only for team but for the school. I am happy because we did and this will make our school proud,” a shy faced Fayon Harry explained after the game.
Earlier on, the third place playoff had to be decided from the penalty spot after the game remained deadlocked at 0-0 after full and extra time between West Ruimveldt and St. Pius.

West won the shootout 2-1.
During the presentation of the championship trophy, co-director of the Petra which is the company that organized the tournament, Troy Mendonca, stated that, “I want to dedicate this tournament to the teachers, parent and guardians that put in their best efforts to have the tournament played despite setbacks and of course the players who displayed exceptional talent which in itself makes the tournament a success.”
Representative of the main sponsors Ansa Mcal through their Smalta brand, Sean Abel, exuded congratulations to the champions and second place finishers, while encouraging all the players to train harder so not to make a stronger title bid but to be better players. He thanked all the stakeholders that helped to make the event the success that it was. (Calvin Chapman)
