â 12 abandoned camps, several dug out trenches also at location
Soldiers yesterday found an illegal airstrip, a chain saw and aviation fuel five kilometres west of Santa Fe, outside of Lethem.
The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) said that ranks were conducting a reconnaissance mission when they made the discovery. There were 12 abandoned camps at the location and several dug out trenches.
The GDF said that the authorities are conducting a thorough investigation, as the alleged find represents the challenges faced by the security forces in the Hinterland.
Over the past few years several illegal aircraft were seized by the state.

The items were neatly concealed

It is quite interesting that the airstrip was not discovered while in the process of being built, given the proximity to a frequented area.
Why do the GOG need the Chinese to build an airport when one was built with just a chain saw and an axe?
The army should not have disturbed or let the cat out of the bag so soon. They should have staked out the area.
What happened to the aircrafts that were seized by the GOG over the past years?
