Sooba has usurped the authority of the democratically elected Council - Bulkan

The A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) is of the opinion that no good can come to the City until Local Government Elections are held. This, the coalition contends, is mainly because the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has been “Soobaerized.”
At yesterday’s weekly conference, APNU lamented the need for Local Government Elections to be held. Along with the other points of constitutionality, APNU bemoaned the fact that Local Government Elections have not been held since 1994. In fact, it was Shadow Minister of Home Affairs Winston Felix who pointed out that within the 20 years since Local Government Elections was last held Guyanese lost six opportunities to elect their Regional Leaders.
Felix, who is APNU’s Election Campaign Manager, added that government has imposed its “imperial majesty (Sooba)” on the City even as a collective call was made on President Donald Ramotar to have his Ministers desist from such practices in general.
Shadow Minister of Local Government, Ronald Bulkan told those who gathered at the press conference that the City has a new Mayor. He said, “It is quite clear that the City of Georgetown has a new Mayor… no her name is not Patricia Chase Green, it is none other than Carol Sooba.
Bulkan said that the operations of the Town Clerk, (ag) Carol Sooba which is being condoned by Central Government shows that she is the one who is really in charge.
The Member of Parliament said that Sooba has virtually hijacked the authority of Mayor Hamilton Green and by extension, the Council.
Bulkan said it was “very sad and distressing” to observe what Sooba, under the instructions of central government, has done to the Georgetown municipality saying that she has essentially “miniaturized and marginalized” the Council.
“It appears there have been some secret elections which the Council is not privy to where Sooba has been installed as the Mayor of Georgetown,” Bulkan said.
The politician added that “Sooba has usurped all the authority of the democratically elected Council.”
He said the imposition of Sooba on the Council is the root cause for the problems and sorry state of Georgetown.
Earlier in the week, Sooba said that Mayor Green should gracefully bow-out from his current position since, according to her; he seems too tired to function as Mayor.
