The Sophia Ring Road project which is expected to be completed before mid - June will see the linking of the roads from ‘A’ Field through ‘E’ Field.

The project will also cover Liliendaal, Pattensen, Cummings Lodge, and Turkeyen.
Speaking with the Government Information Agency (GINA), Community Coordinator, of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Neilson McKenzie said that the project is quickly progressing and Dennis Street will be completed as per schedule by April 19, 2016. Work is ongoing on this street that will strengthen the roadway, and facilitate the major drainage canal along it. This canal, aids drainage from North and South Ruimveldt, as well as parts of Georgetown, McKenzie explained.

The Sophia community will also have road lights on the various roads starting from “E” Field, then to “B” Field and certain parts of “A” Field, to effectively create a better ambiance, ensure safety and fewer accidents. This project will “give the residents of Sophia who have long been neglected an opportunity to recognise that there’s another means of life when they see light rather than darkness,” said McKenzie.

Prior to the rehabilitation works, the Sophia roads were in a deplorable state. There was also the issue of the roads not being properly built McKenzie stated. “We have worked on greater level of supervision, ministerial output and significant improvements of the quality of road work so that citizens get value for their money, and are satisfied with the quality of works.”

The newly rehabilitated roads will have safety measures such as speed humps, pedestrian crossings and the necessary roads signs to ensure users’ safety.

Mark Thomas, a resident of Sophia, lauded the quality of the road work. “Since we have a new government, I could see the roads them doing the proper way they should be done, they dig them out pal-off the road so they will get no spread, so at least Sophia could get something that could last at least for 20 to 30 years.

During his presentation of the 2015 Budget, Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan, had stated that the Government would invest $387M to upgrade the Sophia Ring Road in a bid to link Sheriff Street / Mandela Avenue to other communities.
