Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman hit out at this year’s Babu John Cheddi Jagan death anniversary commemoration by referring to “intolerant” comments made there by several persons.

At the Babu John event on Sunday March 3, 2013, President Donald Ramotar verbally attacked the Opposition in general and made remarks against former colleague Moses Nagamootoo. He also attacked media houses for being critical and letter writers for stating their opinions on the letter pages of newspapers.

“Honourable members, on the last occasion during the 38th sitting of the National Assembly I called the sitting to an end, following what had in my opinion had become intolerable behaviour and remarks. Remarks such as ‘thief’, ‘liar’, and ‘prostitute’, were just a few of the ones most audible,” he said. “In addition, there was what I consider to be disdain, disgust and disrespect being shown by members to each other and even to the Chair. We are all reminded that we are all, including myself, are elected officials – servants and stewards of the people’s trust and aspirations. The people are not only expecting more robust, fruitful and honourable National Assembly of the 10th Parliament, I believe they are entitled to it,” he said.

He then apologised to anyone that he might have offended during the many exchanges during the previous sitting. “There are far too many statements and actions of intolerance in our society coming from as far away as Babu John to Marudi Mountain and we representing the apex of leadership of this country must deliver a higher level of behaviour and governance,” he said.

The Speaker said that yesterday just before the sitting he received a letter of protest from the Government’s Chief Whip, Gail Teixeira challenging his decision to hold the sitting yesterday. “I believe that it was important for us to resume after a month’s hiatus and to put our house back in order before the much anticipated budget debates commence within a few weeks,” he said.

LAMENTATION OF OBSERVER: Oh, what inappropriate behavour by the president at Babu John..!! .is that the way to remember and honour the late President Cheddi Jagan...? I have visited Babu John seven times since the passing of Papa Cheddi....three times taking visiting relatives; and I always feel so peaceful at that well-maintained and serene cemetery. How...oh, how could people - important people - go to Babu John and cuss out the way some do?? I am weary and tired ...I am ashamed and disappointed... Please, Lord....take away their hearts of stone and put hearts of flesh in their bodies...Let PEACE reign... Peace, perfect PEACE.

Mr Trotman,it is my nature to be fair to my fellow men and not to pick sides.I read this article of yours with full attention, and concluded that you have every reason to make your points known. The trouble starts when a man becomes obsessed with power and is unable to handle the temperature around his enviroment. One should be guided by reasons and morals which are necessary constituents to the political health of a nation. Our leaders most of the times are deficient of these truths.Mr Ramoutar whom I thought may have learned from his predessors has been dissappointing.Words can be devine or poisonous.Mr Ramoutar hasn't done any good to his party nor himself at Babu John.Great leaders govern by means of virtue which can be compared to the excellence of nature. This might be a little too much to ask of people who are placed in positions that expose their inner core, but they should at least show some respect to themselves, the human kind and the nation as a whole.

I agree. I dont understand why Mr Ramotar is following Jagdeo's immature ways of speaking. He MUST do better. He is THe LEADER of ALL Guyana and should NOT be intimidated by Opposition tactics.

Berbicians will not forget his disrespect at Babu John and his unstatesmanship behaviour and will not forgive him as an ousider for calling a stalwart of Berbice uncomplimentary names. Ramotar owes Berbice an apology. It will cost the PPP votes.
