The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Company today handed over a $3M cheque to Delma Nedd, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education towards the Children’s Mashramani Costume Parade, slated for February 14.

Allied Arts Unit Administrator, Desiree Wyles-Ogle, who expressed gratitude to GT&T for associating itself with the children’s Mashramani activities, noted that the company will be contributing directly to the education process of the country’s children, something it has been doing for the past three years.

The children’s Mashramani activities started in 1996, at the National Cultural Centre. It began with a little walk, Ogle explained, and  “Eventually the activities moved to February 23. However, it was posing a problem with the timing of the senior mash parade, which was starting until noon, so it was then put to the Saturday before the Mash activities, starting at the Promenade Gardens,” she related.

Speaking on theatre arts, Ogle pointed out that it is now part of the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC).  “Before, our students would have to leave to observe carnival in another country, as a cultural event, as a part of the syllabus, but the department and the ministry have lobbied for our own Mashramani to be included as part of the cultural form,” she stressed.

GT&T’s Senior Marketing Officer Anji Hackett explained that the two entities have partnered on many projects; however this one is very special. “GT&T has been part of this celebration for the past three years and we are proud to say that we will be continuing our sponsorship for the 2015 costume parade,” Hackett said.

She said that the telephone company is looking forward to the children’s costume competition, and more so, because watching the young people “embrace our diversity and culture and showcasing their talents is something the company is proud of”.

Meanwhile, Nedd thanked GT&T for its continued support shown towards the children’s costume parade.
