Describing the $30B as the largest single domestic burrowing in the history of Guyana, former Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Mohabir Anil Nandlall, on his popular television programme ‘Issues in the News’, is calling for the Head of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) to, immediately, launch an investigation, as recent press reports suggest that this money is now missing.
Nandlall made reference to statements made by the Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder, a few days ago, saying that he is unaware of why the money was burrowed in the first place and that he is unaware where it is and for what purpose it was burrowed.
Notably, a few days after, the Special Purposes Unit (SPU) of National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL) responded and said that is was the Minister of Agriculture who misappropriated the money.
“We are speaking here about $30B GYD, which is the equivalent of $150M USD and the two agencies with responsibility for it do not know where it is? This madness! Persons suppose to be in the lockups already. I am calling upon the Head of SOCU to, immediately, launch an investigation into this missing $30B and to, immediately, invite the Head of the SPU and the Minister to SOCU headquarters.” he argued.
The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Member of Parliament (MP), further explained that based on press reports, $17B have already been disbursed. “This $17B alone is attracting interest at a rate of over $2M per day and no one knows where the money is. But yet, there is no money to pay sugar workers their severance.” Nandlall explained.
