Sports World Classic 2017 Invitational – T&T … Fortune cops women’s physique bronze; Grimes place 4th in men’s physique

The lone female amongst the group of bodybuilders that ventured to the shores of the Twin Island Republic last weekend to compete at the Sports World Classic 2017 Invitational, copped a bronze medal in the body fitness segment of the show.

The indefatigable Alisha Fortune, who is also one of Guyana’s leading Masters Athletes, flexed her way to a podium spot and was the only member of the contingent that achieved such.

Yannick Grimes, competing in the men’s physique was aiming to better his 2016 achievement of a bronze medal but did not succeed as he ended just outside of last year’s position, in fourth.

The other athletes, Emmerson Campbell and Caerus Cipriani who also contested the men’s physique competition and the lone body building class athlete, Rashleigh Bentick, failed to make the top five.

Apart from assisting to raise funds on their own, each athlete was assisted by the Guyana Amateur Body Building and Fitness Federation with half their air fares to the Twin Island Republic.

Federation President Coel Marks in an invited comment prior to the departure of the team had stated that the federation will endeavor to promote and assist as many athletes to do more regional shows as a means of improving their understanding of international competitions which would create a solid stepping stone to this region’s marquee championship, CAC.

Marks also offered a comment on the performance of the team: “In keeping with our mandate of creating opportunities for exposure for our athletes, the federation is pleased with the returning contingent bringing home a bronze and fourth place. The experience garnered by all the athletes who vied cannot be overstated and they all expressed gratitude and recommitted their focus to the sport.”

Apart from the host nation and Guyana, the other participating nations were Suriname, Barbados, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Jamaica, St. Maarten, Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, Curacao.
