Mr. Donald Ramotar addressed the business community for the firs time in his capacity as Head of State beckoning the call for a stable political environment as he deliberated on some of the sectors of growth in Guyana.
The Head of State was at the time speaking at the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s award and dinner held at the Pegasus Hotel where businessmen and women and corporate entities were conferred for their service and contributions to the business environment over the years.
After elaborating on Government’s plans for the mining, energy, services, housing and agriculture sectors, the call for a stable political environment could not be ignored including the outcome of the recently held general and regional elections which left the Government a minority number of seats in the National Assembly.
“It will now depend a lot on the maturity of all the political leaders in Guyana to manage this new situation… this will be in my view a great test to our maturity… we will be willing to work very hard to ensure that this situation that we have… we use it as an opportunity to try to bring our people together,” President Ramotar said.

President Ramotar who recorded history as the first to be elected under a new regime where the Head of State can serve for only two terms in office sees a number of positives in the new dimension which the legislature has taken.
“All three of the leaders of the parties in parliament are for the first time being in the position we are in and I think it would be a great incentive for all of us, for our own benefit… and most of all for our country,” President Ramotar said.
The ruling People’s Progressive Party Civic was re-elected to office after the results of the 2011 general and regional elections were announced two and a half days after Guyanese went to the polls on November 28.
The outcome did not find favour with the main opposition party A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) which called for verification of the Statements of Poll (SOP) arguing that there were several of discrepancies in the process.

Their discrepancies led to a number of street demonstrations, one of which resulted in a faceoff with the police.
This evening, President Ramotar commented on the recent developments, expressing the view that the energies that were dedicated to street protests should instead be used to promote national development.
The President spoke of the “fast growth rate” Guyana has made in the last five years, despite the volatility in the global economy, the merits of cheap energy and the outlook for the mining sector with major investments.
Optimisms remain high about oil and gas with drilling soon to start in the offshore area and President Ramotar said Guyanese must be equipped with the requisite skills to manage the potential wealth coming from this sector.
He also called for strengthening of the services sector as demands will climax in the new economy which President Ramotar said is within reach.
