By Franklin Wilson A sustained offensive onslaught by the home team Fruta Conquerors saw them hammering East Demerara’s Victoria Kings 5-1 when play in the Stag Elite League, Season 2 Round 2 continued last evening at the Tucville ground in the City.
Led by a brace each from Eon Alleyne and Carlos Edwards, the Fruta boys, who finished second to the Guyana Defence Force in the first round as well as the League Leaders tournament crossed the latest hurdle successfully in their quest to top the rampaging Army side. The Kings on debut at this level stood up firm in the opening 26 minutes but once the Tucville based boys were able to crack their defence, they continued the trend with virtual ease for the remainder of the encounter. Eon Alleyne, just off national duties for Guyana in the Martinique encounter provided the opening goal on 26 minutes, his shot beating Victoria’s custodian Rown Hamilton all ends up. It was the breakthrough that the Fruta boys were working for all along and celebrated same with yet another, five minutes later, this time it was off the boot of Dennis Edwards in the 31st minute. Not satisfied with their two goal cushion, Edwards doubled his tally four minutes to the half way mark with another well executed shot as the Kings looked ordinary in their display. The half time whistle temporarily steamed the flow of goals as both teams took the 15 minute break to refocus and re-strategize. After the break, Conquerors continued to have their way as they moved the ball around well even as the Kings showed flashes of dominance at times. Edwards was served up at least two more opportunities to increase his and his team’s tally but muffed up the chances with wayward shots at goal. In all of that, Konata Manning received a neat pass from Alleyne and without hesitation blasted a shot from about 25 yards out to comprehensively beat Howard who did not move an inch other than turning to see the ball settled at the back of the nets. It was now a 4-0 score line for Conquerors with 58 minutes on the game clock. Alleyne would complete his brace in the 80th minute when the Kings goalie chased down a ball way off his line in an erratic display, the ball found its way in the path of the quick thinking Alleyne who fired a well directed shot into the open goal even as the defenders were trying to provide some rearguard cover but to no avail. The Kings were able to net a consolation goal in the 82nd minute, Alden Laurence tucking the ball past Derrick Carter in goal for Conquerors. The first game that was scheduled between Monedderlust and Buxton United did not come off owing to some logistical challenges that resulted in a bus not showing up to transport the West Berbice side to the playing venue. This match would be rescheduled.
