At Stewartville rally… President pledges to continue changing Guyana for the better –to lay the foundation for greater success

STRENGTH garnered from the support of the Guyanese masses is strength enough for the ruling People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C), according to its presidential candidate and incumbent Head of State, Donald Ramotar. “The People’s Progressive Party is strong enough to fight its own political battles,” he said, delivering a jab at the political opposition, whose majority partner is the People’s National Congress (PNC), which has a history of subverting the professionalism of the Armed Forces to sustain its regime via rigged elections.

His message to thousands gathered in support for the PPP/C at its most recent rally held at Stewartville was well received, as evidenced by thunderous cheers, applause and the occasional whistle. Mr Ramotar underscored that as Commander-in-Chief, he has never given illegal instruction to the Disciplined Forces, and never asked them to undertake work of a political nature. “The PPP has always acted in the interest of the people of this country; our record will show that we are the only genuine friends of the Armed Forces, and we are recommitting ourselves to building the Armed Forces to be professional people with the highest level of professionalism in our country,” he stressed. President Ramotar noted that with 14 days to go and less than a week before the Disciplined Forces cast their vote, the ruling party remains committed to the development of Guyana, and improvement in the quality of life for the Guyanese people. “We will continue to change Guyana,” the PPP/C presidential candidate assured its supporters and the nation on the whole. He pointed to the PPP/C’s vision for the future, Guyana 2.0, which was launched on Saturday, and represents his party’s “pact with the Guyanese people” and outlines in detail the specifics of the party’s plans for the next five years. “Our Manifesto not only describes our vision, but outlines in detail how we will make this a reality,” Mr Ramotar said. According to him, growth, job creation, generation of wealth, the boosting of the manufacturing and tourism, among sectors, a focus on food and energy security, as well as a liberalized telecoms sector are plans that will be bolstered by several transformational infrastructural projects. Among those listed are the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project, the expansion of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), bridges across the Corentyne and Demerara Rivers, a deep-water harbour at the mouth of the Berbice River and the rehabilitation of the West Demerara Road. “We will lay the foundations for greater success,” he pledged, adding that the PPP/C will work tirelessly to realise the vision detailed in Guyana 2.0. Mr Ramotar added that interventions in the sugar and rice sectors, major pillars of the economy, will also continue to receive support from his administration. He underscored the success Guyana has had in being able to secure bilateral and multilateral agreements with development partners, in particular the recent support agreed on in India during his meetings with Prime Minister Navendra Modi.

The President stated that to move forward, there must be a “futuristic” focus to be able to capitalise on opportunities, and set the platform for greater advances. On that note, he bemoaned the fact that the political opposition, A Partnership for National Unity and the Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC), has not worked with the current administration to advance development, but has adopted the politics of ‘No!’ This disposition, Mr Ramotar said, is now flipped for the purpose of electioneering, in that the political opposition is now promising hydropower, support for sugar and even the passage of the Anti-Money Laundering and the Countering of the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Bill, all issues on which they were initially unsupportive. “That is their record! We must not allow our gains to be threatened; we must not only protect gains, but our pride and dignity; some of the things we have given our people has no price tag… Freedom of speech, among the things we brought back to our people,” he said. The PPP/C presidential candidate also underscored the fact that there is much at stake come May 11 at the General and Regional elections. “This election is important; this election, we must register the biggest ever victory of the PPP,” President Ramotar declared, reiterating his appeal for the Guyanese people to stand with his party and stand with him and the PPP/C has stood with them throughout the years.

The foundation for greater success was laid during the years 1992 to 1997...the plans were transparent and the Carter Center was impressed and stated that Guyana can become a model for third world development....then came Jagdeo and his band of  " Ali Babbas " and touched the plans and rocked Guyana's development to its foundations.....

During this Golden Age of Shri Cheddi, did ordinary Indians have any say so in electing leaders of the PPP?

Face it old man, your time has come and gone. Depart with some grace. You Jaganites helped to destroy Indians. Do ya'll want a couple more decades to screw up Indians?

Jagdeo did a master stroke by exiling you cretins from Freedom House. Even a drug lord does less damage to Indian people than a Jaganite.

Correct

It is the Jaganites who got us in such a mess. Time to dismantle Freedom House and rid it of Jaganites.

The New PPP is demonstrating that it no longer need Jaganites, they are troublemakers.

One village at a time to victory and one step closer to creating a New PPP.

In the Burnham days , PPP dare not set foot in Stewartville, that village is predominantly Blacks. To have a meeting with such crowd in Stewartville is historic.

Afros are now throwing their support behind the PPP much to the astonishment of some die hard PNC who will soon show up with their clan mentality and deny that the PPP had a very large turnout in PNC territory.

Just goes to show that blacks aren't the savages that the Indo KKK (PPP) makes them out to be.  The pics show an almost 100% Indian crowd, so the folks allowed the PPP to bus in strangers to their village, and leave.  But apparently they didn't attend.

Where is the evidence of this?  Just about every PPP rally is like some thing straight out of Uttar Pradesh in the composition of the crowds.

The PPP is welcome to fool itself that it can bus in crowds of Indians into predominantly black areas and then scream that its getting black support.

Blacks did NOT support the PPP a scant 3 years ago.  What happened since then to make a difference?

You stop short of saying how Cheddi would send Moses Nagamooto out to the PNC strongholds. Moses is brave and not a dharpoke like Ramotar.

If so then some PNC rallies are just out of Namibia.

I agree much more could have been done BUT there are no reasons to RISK ALL that has been achieved. Why go the the Lion's Den???  The Guyanese People are much better economically. What the Guyanese People MUST demand of the new PPP Govt come May 12, is more transparency, Accountability and a FAIR system for Contracts.  Also, the trend of hiring Family and Relative must come to an end. Yes, they may be guilty of such occurrences but that is not enough to BLINDLY give all their gains away.

The bulk of Indo Guyanese owe their origins to UP and Bihar.

Virtually NO Afro Guyanese owe their origins to Namibia, so no a PNC rally cannot look like some thing out of Namibia.  Try Ghana.

Reports are that some Indians are showing up to APNU AFC events.  Yes the crowds are majority black, but not monolithic as we see with the PPPs Indian crowds.

I would like to contradict your statement, kp.

One of the PPP's best fighters in West Dem lived in Stewartville. Manni Kuppan.

Many times in the 1970s I joined Manni along with Pariag Sukhai and Marimootoo in doing PPP campaign work in Stewartville.

PPP public meetings were held in Stewartville Pasture and at that junction where Sew Pandit lived.

Yes, it's true the PNC had strong support in Stewartville, but the PPP had strong support there too.

Mits is correct in stating that the PPP trucked in people to Stewartville yesterday.

We don’t need the army to fight our political battles - Commander-in-Chief assures it of highest professionalism, support

Written by , Published in News, Georgetown, GINA, April 26, 2015, Source

Fourteen days to go to general elections and as the campaign fever heats up, Commander-in-Chief,  President Donald Ramotar has assured the armed forces that his Government nor political party will never ask them to subvert their professionalism and engage in activities outside of their Constitutional mandate.

This assurance came from President Ramotar this evening as he addressed a huge gathering of supporters at Stewartville, West Coast Demerara where his party conducted one of its largest campaign rallies leading up to the May 11 elections.

“The Army and Police have a vital role to play in our social and economic development because we need to operate in a secure environment so that we can take our production level higher and higher, and therefore those servicemen and women in the army and police can count on us to defend their professionalism... the PPP/C is strong enough to fight its own political battles. We don’t have to involve them in our political battles. They will forever serve in the interest of all Guyana,” the President said.

Members of the Guyana Defence Force and the Guyana Police Force will cast their ballots for the elections on May 2,  as they will be on active duty on polling day. Speaking to the armed forces, the Commander- in- Chief said  he takes seriously his oath and responsibility and assured them that he will ask nothing illegal of those under his command.

“We in the PPP/Civic and me as Commander-in-Chief will never give them [armed forces] an illegal instruction. I will never, never want them to do any political work for me. I will always uphold the Constitution of Guyana. I swore to that and I will stick to that. Let them also be aware that the PPP/C has always been looking at the interest of the armed forces of our country. Over the last five years we invested more than $2. 5 billion to improve the services, improve the capital aspect of the Army. Compare that to the $300,000 the PNC was spending on them. That was shameful. They had our soldiers starving…our record  has shown that we are the only genuine friends of the armed forces in Guyana and we re-commit ourselves to building the armed forces to be professional people of the highest level of professionalism,” he said.

With two weeks to go to elections, thousands turned up at Stewartville, Region Three to express support for another term for the PPPC. Region Three has the second largest block of votes, the supporters were told, and at the last elections there was complacency, which turned out to be costly for the party. The PPP/C won the Presidency the last time around, but lost their majority hold in the National Assembly by a single seat.

The economy

“Comrades and friends we have 14 days to go…this elections is about our future…we plan to build our economy to make it stronger. We want to make our economy more resilient, we want to build a modern economy," the President told those gathered there, adding that Guyana  moved from a bankrupt to a middle income country.

“In the next  five years of PPP/C government we will lay the foundation to make Guyana one of the developed countries of this world. To do that we will have to work hard to create more wealth in our country so that we can provide more jobs for the people not just low paying jobs, but highly paid technical jobs to suit the growing educational standards that our people are achieving at this time,” he said. The idea, the President said, is to  minimise the effects of the vagaries of the international economic situation “and we want to build an economy so strong that even the destructive character of the PNC will not prevent this country from going forward … One of the most important things we will do is bring cheap energy to the people. The opposition seek to cut, but they only succeed in delay. When we win the elections we will work tirelessly to bring cheap energy to the Guyanese people that will save you money, put more money in your pocket,” he said. He added that cheap energy will aid in converting Guyana to an industrial country that will focus heavily on manufacturing and increasing exports.

Residents of Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, attending a rally headlined by President Donald Ramotar

Sugar

“While we continue to look at new sectors for investment for additional wealth, we will repair, fix and modernise our traditional sectors. The absolute, most import of our traditional sectors is the sugar industry of Guyana, and we commit that we will fix the problems in sugar to ensure that the industry continues to make a vital contribution.” He highlighted that the problems of sugar were largely external due to the cut in preferential prices.

Nevertheless, “we are working to transform it from being just a producer of sugar to produce several other commodities. We have started selling packaged sugar. We are looking for more markets. We have also started to produce in a small way, ethanol…we want to expand that and make it in volumes so that we can export…We want to start producing specialised sugar, liquid sugar that we can sell to the soft drink industry and in those areas we can make more money because we will be adding value to our sugar, and ultimately we want to build a refinery in our country so that we can produce white sugar .This PPP/C government is committed to helping the industry, and I promise you here today when we win the elections on May 11 we will spend a minimum of $20 billion to secure the industry.”

Rice

Investments will also be made in the rice sector as government will “work harder to ensure farmers enjoy the fruits of (their) labour.”

Government has been investing heavily in drainage and irrigation, and this has redounded to the benefit of farmers as production moved from 90,000 tonnes in 1990 to over 600,000 tonnes at present. Government will also continue its pursuit of additional markets, but in the meantime will establish additional price support mechanisms to help farmers.

ICT

The President told the gathering of his government’s intention to build the “most modern” Information Technology park that will spread to other regions with the help of the Indian Government. He also noted that legislation was put before the National Assembly to revolutionise services in this sector locally, but never got to the agenda even though it would have brought down cost of ICT services and created more jobs. Nevertheless, “we will build new facilities to house more call centres that will employ 1000 persons right here on West Demerara. At the national level, we need also other important infrastructure to stimulate new sectors that will help shape the future…”

Tourism

He noted that there is significant potential for development in tourism and that is why government is preparing the infrastructure to capitalise in this regard. The preparation, he said, includes expanding the airport, which will not only bring competition for air travel, but reduce the cost of freight thereby lowering the cost of many items. “Our manifesto not only describes our vision, but we have here the infrastructure that we need…and how we are going to finance these things.”

Also slated for Region Three are a new highway and a new bridge across the Demerara River, while a  Deep Water Harbour and a bridge to Suriname are planned for Region Six, which could accommodate larger ships than the current  Demerara Harbour, which accommodates ships under 10,000 tonnes. There will also be accompanying road networks.

“We will link that [harbour] with a new road from the coast all the way to Lethem, and we will also make other roads in our country. Right now we already signed a contract for the West Demerara highway, making it wider…and we will move on to do the same thing on the West Bank," he said, as well as the Canal Polders roads and a road from Parika to Riverview, nearby Bartica. The latter will open more lands and opportunities for Guyana to cash in on the Caribbean’s food import markets.

“The biggest obstacle to this development plan we have is an opposition that is not interested in development,” the President told the exuberant crowd, adding that, “Over last three years they voted against everything in the National Assembly. They voted against Amaila (hydro project). We could have started building Amaila already. We could have been half way," he said, but it was not supported by the Opposition and now as the election nears, the said opposition is showing support for hydro power.

A similar story could be told of sugar, the Cheddi Jagan Airport expansion project and the Specialty hospital, the President said, noting that cuts in the budget also affected Amerindian Development, students' loans at the University of Guyana, and the 'Because we Care' $10,000 cash grant for each child in the public school.

Residents of Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, welcoming President Donald Ramotar, prior to a community rally

He noted that the Alliance For Change had promised betterment for sugar workers during the last campaign and “less than a year later agreed with APNU that the sugar industry should shut down. Can you trust them?" he queried of the crowd. “They are trying to scare off investors,” with their non support for transformational projects.

“What they were cutting from the budget was not luxury things, but things we were doing for you.”

Speaking about the Amerindians, the President said “the PPP/C has been investing  and building their capacity, already we have graduated more than 33 Amerindian doctors in this country and now that the people are rising up and coming to face the challenges of a modern economy and when we are helping them to build their village economy. The APNU and AFC cut the Amerindian  capital budget depriving the people from gains."

The President said the Opposition lack clarity and plans to take Guyana forward as was revealed in a 'leaked' version of the proposed manifesto.

He opined that the AFC and APNU pre-coalition discussions were focused on political leadership and not plans for Guyana’s future.

The President noted that “we have come a far way. We have to protect our gains... We used to be the laughing stock of the Caribbean, now we are the fastest growing economy in the region…today Guyana proudly can say we are one of the freest countries in the whole world.

Throughout the modern history of our country, the PPP and the PPP/C stood by you. Every action we took in and out of government was to protect  and promote the welfare of the people. The cup our symbol is one of the most faithful utensils you can find … the same way the cup and the PPP have always been faithful to you, I ask you on May 11, two weeks from now, I ask you to stand by us, I ask you stand with me and let's work together and make Guyana one of the best places in the world.”

I know that being a PPPite you are blinded in racism and illiteracy, so have poor comprehension skills.  I said BULK.  I didnt say all.

In any case did you trace your entire family?   You do know that each generation brings in new people, so unless there was a rule that only people with origins in Haryana could marry into your family, you do have some UP/Bihar as those were the largest sources of migrants to Guyana from India.

Now I know that the dalit side of your family embarrasses you, but it is what it is.

Not true, PPP is extremely strong in West demerara.  In 2011, they scored

33,000 votes in West demerara.  APNU - 14,000.

Fact are fact, let us cut the crap.

I just want them to put proper lights on the main road so no more people get run over. With that, S.Ville from since I was small had sections that were large Indo and Afro it depends on the section you were in. Line top you will find more Indians than in Scheme. But now that's all changing as well. Regardless I would just like to see some more progress. This racial behavior or the people is just not conducive to change for the better.

And I want the Health Minister fired. SMH

Buzz: Jagdeo ‘uber alles’

Apr 27, 2015

Another weekend of screaming: Rohee with his plaintive cry like the “clap on clap off” pensioner who’s fallen and can’t getup, urging young people to go ask their grandparents to teach them about life under the PNC; Irfan Ali shouting until he tears out his tonsils: “Nagamootoo is a rat…” and the menacing dog whistler Jagdeo: “We must make sure we don’t hand our country over to them.” (on Agricola) “They sent their thugs…and they feel the women up.”

Lend me your glasses oh perceptive one, so I can see how Stewartville is "going" to the PPP.

Rass bai, all I can say, you wutliss no ass.

BT

You better be shaking.

I was looking at some internal polling numbers and it looks like my 53 Percent prediction may go up another one percent.

The PPP lead is widening on the PNC.

The opposition are too lazy. This campaign is about hard work and the AFC does not have the proper work ethic.
