Stunning array of costumes at Children’s Mash parade

It was a riot of colours of varying hues – rich and impressive, amidst a sea of glitter depicting aspects of Guyana’s culture, mineral resources, technology and flora and fauna on the streets of Georgetown today.

The event, the Children’s Costume Competition, saw a dominant theme of blue in keeping with the sponsor’s, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph company’s colour, and culminated the annual Children’s Mash competitions. The phone company donated $3.6M to the Education Ministry for the event that saw Georgetown schools and regional contingents participating.

He emphasised that some of the pieces showcased today can be compared with anything in the adult parade which will be held next Saturday. “There are a lot of creativity, a lot of colours and some of them were exceptionally put together…I am extremely pleased with what I saw,” Minister Anthony said.

The Minister is expecting another good parade on February 23 for which he noted there are some very large bands with between 300-500 revellers.

The revellers, ranging from nursery to secondary students, followed the usual route of the parade which commenced in Middle Street (at Parade Ground), and moved north along Camp Street, east into Lamaha, north, into Albert Street and finally into the National Park where the contingents were given the opportunity to display their costumes and floats in front of the judges. Many of the groups had choreographed presentations which pleased the on-lookers.
