Supenaam stelling ramp collapses again

JULY 6, 2012 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

Over 50 vehicles heading to Parika were unable to make their daily trip across the Essequibo River because of another complication with the ramp at the new stelling at Supenaam.
According to vehicle owners, the ramp broke again under pressure after a truck attempted to go onto the ferry. This caused a sudden halt to the loading operation.
Construction of the Good Hope/Supenaam stelling began about five years ago after a $400 million contract was awarded to BK International.  The pontoon attached to the stelling collapsed when the first vehicle was loaded.
The government intervened and spent another large sum of money to re-fashion the pontoon.  The stelling was put into operation, but from time to time there were problems. This collapse of the ramp is the latest problem.
Frustrated vehicle owners said although the incident happened during morning hours, they were only informed by management at Supenaam, some time yesterday afternoon.
β€œSince Monday, vehicle owners have being encountering difficulties to cross.”
In the wake of the problems at Supenaam, vehicle owners said they were directed to the old Adventure stelling.
Benn, while on a visit to the Essequibo Coast, in May, tried to reassure Essequibians that the stelling would be fully operational in August.
But while that promise was made, no works have been ongoing at that site, except for a few piles driven by some contractual workers earlier this year. One driver has described the situation as frustrating.”This is a spare wheel.”
The driver said that some of their fellow truck drivers have been left stranded at the Supenaam stelling since Monday. The abandoned Adventure stelling had to be swiftly put back into operation until the repair works at Supenaam were completed.

There is half truths in some of this.  It's not an issue of design or flawed construction, maybe they could be blamed for not considering the full needs and adherence to weight limits.

This was an IDB funded project and they had engineers and monitors on the job.  It was designed for a max tonnage but after the project was completed and handed over for local admin, much heavier trucks were being allowed onto it.  The pilings and general structure was not designed causing settling and as such the problems we see today.

On the issue of tiefing, true, there were project managers, mostly family members and friends of the PPP elite assigned as "managers" stood in their AC offices in GT, made a few calls every week then prepared reports for the officials without setting foot on the site.

Public Works Ministry $60M repairs to Supenaam stelling failed

…BK International called in to effect rescue operation

The modification to the Supenaam Stelling by the Ministry of Public Works at a cost of more than $60M may have gone to waste.
It involved the attachment that had been installed by the Ministry of Public Works and failed causing the ramp at the stelling to again buckle under the weight of trucks.

The section of the ramp that failed

On Thursday, scores of vehicles destined for Parika were left stalled at Supenaam, Essequibo, as the critical piece of infrastructure again failed.
This publication understands that several hours after the steel beam below the ramp buckled the very company that had been under fire previously for works undertaken at the very stelling had to be called in to effect emergency repairs.
BK International had undertaken the initial works prior to the Ministry’s intervention and has now been called out once again.
Engineers and personnel were yesterday at the stelling looking to effect the repairs.
Officials at the time could not give an estimate for the repairs but the price tag attached to getting the stelling up and running continues to escalate.
Only a few days ago the multi-million-dollar Link Ramp Bridge which was constructed on the eastern end of the Essequibo River sank and was damaged in the process.
An investigation revealed that the structure had been moored badly and came under pressure when the tide receded and rose again.
It was transported at a cost of $650,000 but the amount paid for the salvage operation at that time is yet to be determined.
That salvage operation was effected by Benjamin’s Marine Salvage Services.
Thursday’s mishap saw more than 50 vehicles destined for Parika having to head over to the Adventure Stelling

The ignominy of a third failure by the same construction company and the incapacity of the Minister of works to intervene to sanction this company, a patron of the administration, speaks to the base level of cronyism that has dominated our society under the PPP. At this point they have no refuge but look you straight in the face and say you are ignorant to the mystery of their rule and being the sole benefactor of divine wisdom one need not question their methodology or integrity!

In Parliament, these brazen thieves recently had the nerve scream "unfair" and rose in a vociferous chorus to deny that NICIL is transferring state assets to their cronies. Yet the would not tell us what the hell they are doing with the money having not completed a report of their activities in a decade. Then there is the idea that legislative body of our nation cannot inform them on their behavior. Since as usual, they know better, they believe the court will rule in their favor that they have sole authority over the budget. They are the supreme law in their minds. They proposes and disposes and the rest of us be dammed.

The editorial by Mark Ramotar this week was disgustingly racist. Again the defense is they tell the truth. Indians are victims despite the pellucidity   to any observer only a small group of Indians who are their kith and kin are becoming grotesquely rich and flashing cash in vulgar ways in the society.  This belief that we are stupid is their self delusion and their brazen  mask to the  the majority of Guyanese, Indians included, who  are being screwed by a completely corrupt government.

Of course they still look in the rear view mirror and into the past 20 years ago for the boogieman excuse. The PNC is their political amulet against loss of  control of the state. They continue to believe that they have a bullet proof talisman here so they can do as they pleases; lie steal, defame, denigrate and eviscerate anyone using the state media and the peoples money and they will feel no retributive fall out.

I doubt the youth who makes up the majority of the voting population will continue to be duped. That is asking them to be blind to too much. One does not do injury to ones sell that easily. The PPP most certainly understand that. Morality is a naturally evolving consequence of right actions. When things go too far in one way it always come back. That is the way of things inevitably just. We will see the back of these bastards not too far in the future.

The "heavier trucks" is being diverted to abondoned Adventure stelling...how come the "weight limits" is not a factor to that relic that was build probably a century ago....

The structure was totally different, different material and less functional.  I don't know what trucks are being diverted and don't say these were the ones causing the problem.  From what I know, other very heavy trucks are allowed to use it, trucks that are over the weight limit of its design.
