Suriname authorities detain 45 Corentyne fishers

Forty-five fishers from Corentyne were between Sunday and Wednesday, detained by Suriname Marine Patrol for entering the Corentyne River without having their passports stamped. The fishers are crew members of nine fishing boats.
Suriname soldiers from the country’s capital Paramaribo spearheaded the operation.

The fishers were arrested and later fined the equivalent of US$100. Failure to pay the fine will mean deportation sometime next year.
When the first set of fishers were held, two boat owners went to investigate and attempted to cross the Corentyne River. They too were taken into custody for being in the waters illegally.
This move by Suriname is having a negative impact on fishing on the Upper Corentyne. Surinamese authorities are claiming that the fishers were in Surinamese waters illegally.
Chairman of the Upper Corentyne Fishermen Co-op Pamishwar Jainarine told this publication that the Surinamese intensified the campaign early this year.
“Traditionally, we have fished in these waters for about 50 years and we don’t normally take out passports to go and fishing. You just go in the fishing boat and go out into the water,” Jainarine related.
In June, a campaign by the Surinamese Border Patrol resulted in the arrest of scores of Guyanese who attempted to cross the Corentyne River via the ‘backtrack’.
Meanwhile, between Sunday and Wednesday, the military patrol was not checking to determine whether the fishers were licenced to fish in the Corentyne River, but rather only to find out if the Guyanese had passports with a stamp of entry to Suriname.
Suriname’s immigration policy grants six months stay to Guyanese seeking to enter the country legally.
Jainarine maintains that the action by the Surinamese amounts to harassment. He said the only way the fishers will be ‘legal’ in the waters is if they go to the Canawima crossing at Moleson Creek and leave through the port, then use the ‘Backtrack’ to get back to Guyana after having their passports stamped. He said the fishers will then have to take their boats and go into the waters to fish.
This process, the Chairman noted, is almost impossible for the fishers.
Currently, the patrol boats are waiting on other vessels which are out at sea. This publication understands that sixty other boats with a combined crew of 300 are still out at sea.
According to Jainarine, under the licences which the fishers were granted to operate in the Suriname waters, they are required to take their catch first to a port in the neighbouring state. In fact, some of the boats taken on Sunday were on their way to the town of Nickerie in Suriname to purchase ice which is what must be done under the licences.
The fishers go to Suriname, purchase ice and then return before going on the fishing expedition.
Jainarine further explained that many of the members of the Number 66 Fishermen Co-op Complex do not have birth certificates and hence cannot acquire passports.
“Most of the fishermen are poor people; their parents did not register them at birth. When we make attempts to get them registered they don’t have birth certificates.”

Why isn't jackass Granger et al not supporting these fishermen? Back in PPP time these PNC jackasses were saying that the PPP soft. We would expect them to send a battalion of soldiers to free the fishermen. Looks like these afc/pnc idiots are all talk and don't have any backbone to teach the Surinamese a lesson. Or maybe its because its Indians that got arrested, they don't care.

The fishing coop should take pro active steps to have these people declared guyanese citizens since it would be easy for them to prove long standing residence and who are their parents. Obviously this claim has a ring of some untruth to it for many reasons.

Many of these fishers were born under the PPP regime. The PPP did not ensure their births were registered. Did they vote in the last election?

I would hate to think there are so many illiterates in the fishing industry. These individuals would have had some record of residency if they attended local schools etc. Amerindians deal with this all the time but being Christians they usually have a "christening document" from the local church ministry.

What is alarming is the silence from the GOG. Now the Granger apologists again try to blame the PPP which is no longer in power. Looks like they are guilty of FWI, "fishing while Indian?"   Apparently our people have no protection from the PNC administration.

It was not up to the PPP to ensure that their births were registered. It was up to their parents to make sure their sons and daughters were registered. The PPP could not go to each house and check to see who just had a child and if that child is registered. Is the PNC currently doing this?

Whether they are illiterates or not, they put their lives at stake and provide for their families. You don't hear them(the illiterate) go kicking down the doors, killing coolies, robbing and raping the innocent. What makes you think that these people are illiterates?  Many of these people might have gone through high school and are unable to find a suitable job. Maybe their last resort is to be a fisherman rather than a thief or murderer to make a living.

Jainarine is a PPP man. How is it possible to grant them licenses without birth certificates? Jagdeo got married and did not register his marriage. One would think that since this is a PPP stronghold that the PPP would have acted to regularize their birth registrations in order to secure their votes.

You are off on a tangent and pivoting to your racist inclinations when it race has no bearings here. Even so I can list more than a hundred such cases where an indian or indian gang ie (popcorn and his boys) murdered raped or otherwise committed heinous crimes. One pirate is assumed to have been a serial killer murdering as many as a dozen people. Your pivot is due to your jaundiced racism as usual.

No one can get through high school without a birth-certificate. Every person has to produce verification of age to write exams. At least that is what I remembered. There is an attempt of the Co-op to exaggerate. Maybe one or two of these fellows are haplessly illiterate but not the majority. Their failure to procure the proper documents is due to their lack of due diligence and excusing it on the lack of a birth certificate.
