Suriname moves ahead with new President, but Granger refuses to accept loss in Guyana

https://i2.wp.com/www.inewsguyana.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/santoki.jpg?resize=696%2C399&ssl=1President Desi Bouterse will transfer power to incoming President Chan Santokhi

Guyana’s neighbour, Suriname, is moving forward steadily with its transition to a new government following the country’s General Elections on May 25, 2020.

According to a report by StarNieuws, earlier today (Monday), Chan Santokhi was elected President and Ronnie Brunswijk as Vice President of the Dutch-speaking nation.

The extraordinary meeting to have this process finalised was attended by all political groups, so that more than 34 members were present in the room. Even though there are no counter-candidates, the qualified majority is required to be declared legally elected.

The extraordinary public meeting was led by Assembly Chairman Ronnie Brunswijk at the opening. After appointment of the polling station, led by Krishna Mathoera, Brunswijk transferred the hammer to Vice President Dew Sharman, as he is a candidate himself.

Mathoera announced that the nomination has been done correctly. The required documents have also been found to be correct. Sharman determined that Santokhi has been elected President and Brunswijk as Vice President, StarNieuws reported.

According to StarNieuws, the meeting was attended by President Desi Bouterse and Vice President Ashwin Adhin. The official transfer of power will take place on Thursday allowing the country to move ahead with its development plans.

The General Elections in Suriname were held on May 25, and within days, the results were declared and accepted by all parties.

President Bouterse had conceded defeat for the sake of allowing his country to move forward, but it is the opposite for his counterpart in Guyana.

Guyana’s President David Granger, has tightened his grip on power even though the results of a national recount have confirmed that his ruling party was massively defeated by over 15,000 votes.

Granger’s APNU/AFC Coalition was defeated twice – first in a no-confidence vote in the Parliament in December 2018 and then at the March 2 national elections.

After prolonging the elections for more than a year following the no-confidence vote, the elections were finally held on March 2, 2020.

It is now close to five months since the electorate voted but credible results are yet to be declared even though they are widely known and certified by all stakeholders, including the parties themselves and local and international observers.

The national recount results, which constitute data generated from the 2,339 Statements of Recount (SORs), show that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) won polls with 233,336 votes cast in its favour.

GECOM’s Chief Elections Officer, Keith Lowenfield, is blatantly refusing to carry out the directive of Chairperson, Justice (Rtd) Claudette Singh to use the certified recount results as the basis to prepare his report for final declaration, as ordered by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

In fact, on several occasions, he presented concocted numbers which sought to hand a false victory to Granger’s APNU/AFC Coalition.

Calls are mounting from several quarters for Lowenfiled to be dismissed for his partisan actions in order for a new CEO to be appointed and to be directed to produce a credible report so that the elections could be declared.

International powers have threatened sanctions against anyone found to be involved in any action that seeks to undermine Guyana’s democracy.

A convicted murderer has the decency to concede the election in Suriname but a god fearing, praying man refuse to accept that he lost the election in Guyana.

When Granger goes into prayer, he starts off, "Hello Darkness, I've come to talk you again." It is like Moses ( not Naga) going up to the mountain for instructions. Sometimes, God takes the things intended to be bad and make good out of it.

The thought of Jagdeo/Irfaan governing Guyana must be appauling to the PNC to the point of challenging the world. I suspected they intended to bully an inclusive government. Now, I suspect they decided just ignore whatever GECOM declares. ignore the PPP votes, ignore Caricom, ignore all dem white ppl. Just sit tight, wait and watch.

Granger knows he is battling against principalities and darkness of the Indo minds, he has deep deep convictions of that, in the likes of Jagdeo, Irfaan and the PPP cabal. Any man who sees good in ppl will be good to them. Granger never saw good in Indians, two thousands Indians vote and make him Presdent and see what he choose to be after.

All is gone now, if he had any good intentions, it is all gone. A dictator must find some humans to hate and sic his followers upon. Wismar comes to mind.

But, there is hope for Granger, he talks to God. A good son, his father will guide him.

Comparing Granger to the biblical Moses is like comparing gooseberries to apples.

For what they did to me in 1964. I do forgive but I do not forget.

Suriname is a very different country than Guyana.  They view themselves as equal within their borders.  Guyana's One People, One Nation, One Destiny was Burnham's concoction of a shield for his apartheid-style rule.  Blacks in Guyana don't view Indians as equal status as them.  Just read what they write on FB, read writing of people like Bond, Burke and Hinds.  They refer to people of a certain "persuasion"!

The mentality of the PNC more resembles that of Idi Amin, Pik Botha, the Israeli Likud, etc.  They do not believe in one person, one vote.  That applies to Blacks, Indian Votes are 1 X 66%.

Bouterse hands over power in peaceful transition in Suriname

https://newsroom.gy/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/WhatsApp-Image-2020-07-16-at-1.30.55-PM-750x430.jpegIt was around 11 am. After all duties, the symbol of the Republic of Suriname could be formally attached. President Desi Bouterse says goodbye after 10 years and Chan Santokhi takes office. (Image: STVS)

StarNieuws, Suriname: Outgoing president Desi Bouterse placed the presidential sash for his successor Chan Santokhi.

The transfer of power in the country took place at an extraordinary public meeting in Independence Square. In a totally open atmosphere, outdoors, in the bright morning sun in the presence of the outgoing government, diplomatic representatives, other officials and the public, Santokhi has been inaugurated as the tenth president of Suriname.

President Santokhi has sworn his government team in the specially decorated tent on Independence Square.

The oath was read by the Director of the Interior, after which the ministers were sworn in one by one. Most were assisted by spiritual pastors. Of the 17 ministers, six are women (3 from the VHP), 2 from ABOP and one from the NPS.

Head of State Santokhi promised that despite all obstacles, the country will be fine. “The government will deliver on the promise made to the people.”

In his speech after the appointed and sworn ministers, Santokhi said that this is the second phase since the inauguration of the president and vice president. Now a cabinet has been presented to the people of Suriname.

All ministers have made their oath or promise. At the start of the mission they allow themselves to be protected by the Creator. Ministers, Vice President and President will do their work as God expects them to.

A lot has happened prior to this appointment. There was an election on May 25, 2020. A tough campaign was launched. The people have spoken. The result of the people’s statement.

“Are you that product today. Do not forget that the people have placed you. You are going to work for that people. You have promised to the people that you will take him out of the crisis. That will happen with the people. We are a people’s government. We will continue to communicate with the people, “said President Santokhi.

The President stressed that the country is in serious crisis. The people will be taken out of the crisis. Trust will not be betrayed. This applies to every minister and member of this cabinet.

In everything that is done, the question must be asked whether it is good for the country and the people. Whether the country will move forward with that. That must be asked every day by the ministers.

Sanokhi noted that the country will be governed by unity. Although ministers have been nominated by the political parties, this will not apply to the way in which government will be held. A government policy will be implemented. There will be ruled together, without wasting time.

The electorate has received a large mandate. From this moment on, work will start. Friday is the first government meeting where the agenda will be discussed and how it will be dealt with. Over the weekend, the government retreats to bring togetherness, team building, and knowledge of various issues that ministers will face.

The government will be accountable to The National Assembly. There will be good cooperation between the government and parliament, which supervises and ensures the legislation. There will also be good cooperation with the judiciary, with a good balance between the three powers. Content will be given to strengthening the rule of law.

There will also be close cooperation with various other organizations such as the trade union movement, the business community and civil society. Ministers will have to double their duties and cut their rights in half.

“With good policy and good governance, I am convinced that we will have the most crucial problems in the country under control in the very short term. Government Santokhi / Brunswijk God bless you. Together we will do it.”
