Visiting UNASUR Secretary General expresses confidence in President Ramotar

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Visiting Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and Former President of Columbia, Dr. Ernesto Samper Pizano says he is confident that President Donald Ramotar will resolve the ongoing political stalemate in Guyana soon.
He told Reporters on Tuesday, January 20 at a media briefing that he met with both President Ramotar and Foreign Affairs Minister Carolyn Rodrigues –Birkett where concerns surrounding Guyana’s prorogued Parliament and general and regional elections were discussed.
The UNASUR Secretary General acknowledged that he is aware of the situation but said he is confident that the President will address the issue of general elections soon, thereby bringing an end to the two month old prorogation.
President Ramotar prorogued Parliament on November 10, 2014 ahead of a debate on a No – Confidence motion brought against his administration; saying it was to facilitate dialogue between the Executive and the parliamentary opposition.
The Opposition has refused to engage the government and the President has since committed to dissolving Parliament and calling fresh elections ahead of its 2016 due date.
Dr. Ernesto Samper Pizano said the Guyanese Head of State has officially requested from UNASUR, a commission of observes to support the elections that he is preparing to announce a date for.
