Police at Port Kaituma have detained a man who allegedly lured an eight-year-old girl with a sweet and then brutally raped her. The incident reportedly took place last Friday at a place called Barama Log Pond, while the child was on her way to school. According to reports, the child’s mother noticed that her clothes were covered with blood, and upon enquiring, the woman was given the gory details of the child’s ordeal at the hands of the suspect, who residents described as a stranger to the community. “I don’t know him. He’s a strange person,” a source at Port Kaituma told this newspaper. The suspect is said to be a labourer who works at the waterfront discharging cargo from boats. The badly injured child, who hails from an area called Oronoque, was taken to the Port Kaituma Health Centre where she was examined and treated. Kaieteur News was informed that the Child Care and Protection Agency has been engaged in the matter, while the suspect awaits his day in court.
