Project to begin immediately Mayor Winifred Haywood
Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility with Culture, Youth and Sports Dr. George Norton has been making rounds since appointment to his new position.
The Minister has been leading from the front as he envisaged fulfilling all promises made by his government. Minister Norton is also determined to show that the Social Cohesion initiative can and will work, especially when it is combined with the Culture, Youth and Sports. A proven hard worker and go getter, Minister Norton was recently in New Amsterdam to inspect the site for the laying of a Synthetic Track in Berbice. The popular Burnham Park Ground situated in New Amsterdam was selected for the project. The Burnham Park Ground with its vast land space and 400M track was once popular for football, athletics, motor and cycle racing among other activities before it was neglected and left to fall to pieces. Dr. Norton was accompanied by a team of Government and local official, including those from the Region and Mayor and Town Council. Loud applause by local government officials and citizens present filled the atmosphere as the information was relayed to those gathered by the honourable Minister. The Minister made mention that the sum of $500 million is set aside for the commissioning and completion of two synthetic tracks in the country. “The next big project is the 500 million dollars for 2 synthetic tracks, ladies and gentlemen one of the synthetic track is supposed to be on the ground we are standing on,” he stated.
Norton expressed the belief that Burnham Park is the best location to plant a synthetic track for Region 6. The Synthetic track is an initiative for the development of sports in the community and region. Making the point that he is a man of action – the Minister urged all stakeholders to get on board as quickly as possible so that the project will be a resounding success. Acting Mayor of New Amsterdam, Ms. Winifred Haywood, spoke of how elated she was to receive information about developmental works in New Amsterdam. She assured the minister that work would commence immediately. Also present was Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region 6, Kim Stephen. She gave assurance that the necessary funds will be made available as in a timely manner. She assured that there will be no delay. The REO stated that, “Honourable Minister, the residents of Region No.6, East Berbice Corentyne are indeed proud and happy that we are not forgotten. That you have taken the opportunity to enlighten us of the things that are in store for Burnham Park.”(Samuel Whyte)
